Au programme

We will embark on a scenic, 3h (4.4km) walk through Knocklofty reserve, a significant refuge for local wildlife and a true native Tasmanian bushland, 5-10min away from Hobart's CBD. We will explore this hidden gem on foot, starting from a scenic viewpoint overlooking Hobart and the river Derwent. There we will learn about the history of the city and the geology of the area awell as the reserve. Then we will climb ~100m on a fire trail towards the summit of Knocklofty, a 375m foothill at the base of the then clearly visible, picturesque Mt Kunanyi (Mt Wellington). After discussing the geographical and cultural significance of the mountain, we will continue to the summit overlooking the Northern suburbs of Hobart, before descending a gently meandering track through the more densly vegetated north eastern slope of the hill. During our descend, we will get beautiful vistas of the city and Tasman bridge, before again arriving at the edges of the reserve. We may detour (time dependend) back to the initial meeting point via the frog ponds to further explore the wildlife and natural beauty of the reserve. Once returned to the scenic lookout we will enjoy a cup of tee and debrief on our experience. Throughout this experience we will closely observe fauna (mainly birds) and flora, as well as think about its conservation and significance for local residents.

I am a biologist who graduated at the University of Tasmania. I have a strong passion for the outdoors and the environment and have been exploring Tasmania for the past 12 years, mostly on foot and under water.

During my scientific career I studied adaptations to the environment in a diversity of animals and have a strong interest in the ecology and physiology of fauna and flora.

I have worked as a bushwalking guide on the famous Overland Track and was part of the team constructing the 3 Capes Track in Tasmania.

As a dive officer at the Univeristy of Tasmania Dive Club I have guided and explored the Tasmanian marine and coastal environment on scuba dive trips for students and the broader public.

In my spare time I have explored Tasmanias mountains and coasts, including Mt Wellington and Knocklofty Reserve in our back yard.

Le lieu

We will be walking on wide fire as well as walking tracks with a hard gravel surface. There will be no rock scrambling or climbing. For the majority of the experience we will be surrounded by trees of the forest with brief exposure to cleared areas. Although tracks are wide, the climb up the hill is steep and unfortunately not suitable for wheelchairs or people with any kind of mobility issues.
