A look at food and medicine through responsibility

Malama 'Aina (caring for the land) is a cultural experience where guests will learn what it means to care for the land, and in the process care for yourself and others. On a modern Hawaiian pu`uhonua (safe place) where Native Hawaiian education, healing, sustainable lifestyle, and natural farming intersect, we will share a system of living, which integrates rigorous Native Hawaiian cultural practice with contemporary science, and all belief systems.

Upon arrival participants will meet our co-hosts (uncle Bruce Kaulani and Kahale Unciano) learn protocol and chant, as well as history and getting to know each other. Guests will then begin projects as assigned for day which from time to time may include removing invasive species, planting native foods or medicines, making art, making tapa, pounding poi, or preparing for other cultural activities the organization participates in. Guests will be taught about the importance of the work, the history of the plants, learn about the local legends and history of Manoa.

We will conclude our time enjoying a meal with ingredients gathered in Manoa.

We met Uncle Bruce & Kahale last week and will never forget our experience with them in Hawaii. Not only did we learn about their mission to protect sacred Hawaiian lands, we were able to engage in a ritualistic tree planting experience & eat an authentic, gourmet meal. Our lives are forever changed! (insider tip: use bug repellent & wear clothing that protects your entire body from mosquitoes in the forest)

This was the best interactive cultural experience on Oahu. It is educational, interesting, fun and spiritual. I loved every moment and aspect. I learned so much. Had fun. Enjoyed a good, local style meal in the coolest setting. The hosts were hospitable, warm and generous. This is a must do event.

I learned a lot about Hawaii, its history and its people that I know I could not get anywhere else in Honolulu. Food was delicious too!

This was definitely an off-the-beaten path experience. We were given the chance to help clear invasive plants, and Uncle Bruce provided not only a wealth of cultural and spiritual information, but he also prepared a beautiful and delicious lunch. The work he is doing definitely earned my respect.

At the base of the Chinese cemetery these two men hold the spirit of true Hawaii and the Hawaiian culture. I am so happy we were able to spend time with them. What they are doing holds the seed for the future while preserving the past. Mahalo to you both with much aloha!

We saw this opportunity on Airbnb and thought it something out of the usual as an HI experience. And it was! My husband, daughter and I visited Living Life Source Foundation (Kuleana Responsibility and well-being) and meet Kahale and Uncle Bruce. We were impressed by the history they shared and they were passing down the HI traditions that are so important to retain. Both Kahale and Uncle Bruce were extremely knowledgeable regarding history from generations gone by. Kahale’s chanting brought all of us to tears of joy. It was raining on the day we attended so we really didn’t do any work so felt bad that we weren’t contributing to their cause but gained so much information regarding, past, present, and future endeavors. Such a wonderful experience. Kahale , Uncle Bruce, and Auntie are gentle souls trying hard to ensure the past and past traditions are passed forward so that history and traditions are retained. The lunch was awesome - pulled pork, chicken, fish, salads, vegetables, rice, and wonderful tea made by Auntie. We would recommend anyone to take advantage of this unique experience. It was truly spiritual, historical, and inspiring!!
