Au programme

"Revealing Kyoto" is a multi-part series that brings you deep into the heart of Japan. Led by a Japanese garden expert, you will experience spaces in a way that you never have before.

※CURRENTLY SHOWING: An Ancient Temple Transformed (Oct.1- Oct. 31)

※AN ANCIENT TEMPLE TRANSFORMED
Otagi Nenbutsu-ji is a temple that fell on hard times after WWII. In an effort to restore it, an ambitious art project was initiated that brought regular people from all over Japan together to carve their own rakan, or followers of the Buddha, out of stone.

In this online experience, we will follow the artistic transformation of this temple and intimately experience the power it emanates. This truly unique and uplifting story will undoubtedly fill your heart with joy and inspiration.

※ZEN GARDEN, ZEN MIND (Nov. 1- Nov. 30)
Experience the restorative power of nature and art while you virtually travel to Japan and immerse yourself in the Zen garden at Konchi-in. While occupying one of Kyoto's magical and sacred spaces created hundreds of years ago you will hear deep insights into the world of Japanese gardens.

Hello. I am a landscape designer living in Kyoto for the last decade. Over the last 3.5 years I have been leading walks of many of the amazing gardens here through my small business called An Design, which has become one of the highest rated tour companies in Kyoto.

Drawing on my 16 years of garden experience in the U.S. and Japan and my self-studies in Eastern philosophy since my early teens, I am able to provide experiences for my guests that are unique and from the heart.

As the only foreigner to graduate from the Kyoto Japanese Garden Training Program, I have gained insights to Japanese culture and gardens that are very rare for an outsider to obtain.

Come with me on an adventure away from the regular tourist route and immerse yourself in the exquisite and mystical nature of Kyoto.

I did this tour with my husband and we both had a great time! The combination of recent footage from the temple and older documentary footage from the time of its relocation provide a detailed and personal history. Andrew is a great guide and took the time to answer each of our questions. Now we have another place to add to our list when we're able to travel to Kyoto!

Having taken a different one of Andrew's online experiences already, I leapt at the chance to hear his insider/outsider perspective and knowledge of this powerful story. Andrew has researched thoroughly and thoughtfully presents the story, all with a personal touch. Like his other online tour, I am left feeling like I just spent the morning at a peaceful temple with an uplifting history. His passion shines through, transcending nationalities. Even post covid, I will keep tuning in to his airbnb experiences, as I think he has figured out how to present the next best thing to being there.

Andrew is a master story teller. This is the second online tour I've taken with him, and they just keep getting better. The way he uses historic and modern video footage, drawings, photos, and authentic music bring you into an immersive multi-sensory experience of the lush and wondrous Otagi Nenbutsu-ji mountain temple. This temple isn't well-known but contains a rich history and unique aspects not seen in other temples. It was a joy to learn about two important artist monks who helped with the temple's restoration, Nishimura Kocho and his son Nishimura Kooei (now head of the temple). Andrew does a spectacular job bringing participants through the nooks and crannies of this beautiful place. I learned a lot, and didn't want it to end. :)

This was my second online tour with Andrew, and I enjoyed it just as much than the first time. Andrew is a fantastic host and a super storyteller, making all of our group feel welcome. It was a calming and inspiring evening spent learning all about a new part of Kyoto, and the connection with Japanese nature and traditions was so special. I would highly recommend this tour if you are looking to be inspired :)

What a unique experience! Following a warm welcome to everybody on the tour, Andrew weaves together live commentary, high-quality film clips, archive footage, specially-curated music and superb maps to tell the captivating story of a very special Kyoto temple. Time for questions, as well as casual conversation with both Andrew and other tour participants during the break allows for relaxed and sociable encounters with the group, plus personal insights from a knowledgeable and approachable guide. Imagine settling down to watch a documentary, except this isn't a recording, the show is live! What's more, the presenter will welcome you personally, you can ask questions and enjoy a relaxed discussion too. 'Tour' doesn't capture what Andrew has created; he offers a new medium through which to explore a fascinating city, and I am looking forward to joining him again. Thank you, Andrew!

This experience with Andrew is a MustDo for everyone who likes to experience unknown, hidden and surprising sites. It is very interesting and immersive, I now have the feeling of having been there. The story Andrew tells about the temple really touched me. And he seems to be just the right person to spread this story. Highly recommended.
