Au programme

This walking tour for photographers will give you an opportunity to take beautiful photos around the Gion district from sunset to blue hour and into the evening, when the geisha district comes alive with magical lantern lights. Our route takes us from Gion-Shijo Station where we'll meet, to the banks of the Kamo River through the inner alleys of Gion with stops at various shrines, preserved old streets lined with century-old machiya, and vantage points from which to shoot the night lights.

I'll be sharing tips and instruction as you need it and also how to plot out a photowalk using the Photopills app. For beginners, I'll show you the ins and outs of shooting manually in low light conditions, creative use of White Balance, and so on. Please feel free to ask all the photography questions you want! I'll be available from March 23 to April 8 this Spring 2019. Non-photographers are also welcome!

Please note, this tour is mainly for those who want to take pictures. If you would like us to take pictures of you, please book our Gion Walk with Personal Photographer experience (https://www.airbnb.com/experiences/324488)

Hi! I'm Dariel, my wife Cathy and I are both freelance photographers and writers who've fallen head over heels for Kyoto. There's nothing we enjoy more than walking around this lovely old city's back streets in the early mornings or late afternoons, camera in hand, and it's even more fun when we do it with friends. I used to teach photography at a university and in workshops, and my wife and I used to write for a photography magazine as well as other publications. https://www.dcqphotography.com/, on Instagram dariel.quiogue.photography.

Le lieu

Gion is a great area for sunset and blue hour photography. Our route takes us from the riverside to Yasaka Pagoda and Ninnenzaka, Gion-Shirakawa, then back to Gion-Shijo Station. My wife and I conceived this photowalk around tripods, as so many attractions in Kyoto now disallow them. Our route consists entirely of places where we're free to set up.
