Au programme

I will take you on a morning stroll through the most popular spots in the Shirakawa neighborhood. We'll start our journey crossing a simple stone 60-centimeter-wide bridge over the river. We will walk along the charming river where willow trees sway in the wind. It's a great spot for pictures and it is also deeply related to the beautiful stone garden in Kyoto. In the summer, it's the place of a big event that's loved by both children and adults. I will also take you to a local shrine, which is very famous among young girls. What is the reason for this? Let's find out.

This area is famous for its many temples and shrined and their awe-inspiring seasonal scenery, but you will also be pleased to discover many interesting tidbits of information about Japanese everyday life that will pique your interest.

While viewing the beautiful scenery of the nearby Shirakawa river and the temples and shrines in this tour, you will learn how they relate to daily life in Kyoto. The tour also includes San-mon grand gate, which is a national treasure of Chion-in Temple. Its massive presence will make you stunned and overwhelmed.
During this experience, you'll enjoy Kyoto and Japan with each passing step as we see things on the street that are deeply involved in the lives of the people who live here. Join us on this exploration of this amazing community and see beyond the surface.

I have lived in this area for almost 15 years and I am active as a Kyoto City Interpreter Certified Guide. I usually teach English to neighborhood children, and as a teacher, I try to make the class enjoyable. I would like my guests to enjoy the local charm, a little bit away from the center of Kyoto, through this experience.

Le lieu

We'll visit a local shrine and go through the tunnel of green leaves in early summer. It is so beautiful, quiet, and relaxing. We'll take a look of gate of the famous temple and go to Furukawacho shopping arcade.
Experience a slice of Japanese everyday-life, with a walk through a quaint neighborhood and a long-standing shopping arcade with a variety of unique shops and you can talk to shop owner.

A wonderful tour! We started with a delicious light breakfast and coffee at a small shop while Mitsuyo explained a bit about Kyoto and it’s history. Then we saw the local neighborhood and shopping area, including some tiny shrines, before heading up to a few larger shrines and temples. We ended back in the shopping area with some great snacks and a chance to meet the shop owners. This tour has a perfect mix of history and information about modern Kyoto and daily life there. I’d also note that the sites we visited were a bit off the main tourist route and we found ourselves alone or with a few local people at most of them. Mitsuyo was very fun and engaging to talk with. I was surprised the time went by so fast! I highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting Kyoto and looking to learn a bit more than just some highlights at the big tourist places. Thank you for a great time!
