Au programme

A rare opportunity to photograph the Mid-Hudson bridge at dusk from the overlook at Franny Reese State Park. This unique photography experience lead by professional photography instructor & author, Jeffrey David Montanye, will not only introduce you to a little known beautiful park, but will teach you some valuable camera skills. The photography lesson being presented will teach you how to capture vehicle light trails across the bridge using slow shutter speeds.

We start off with a short hike up an old carriage trail and walk through the ruins of an old estate with photographic opportunities of a mansion foundation. Next, we will hike to an overlook with views of route 44 coming across the Mid-Hudson bridge. Here, the group will setup their tripods and await the evening light as I, Jeff Montanye, give a lesson on long shutter speeds, aperture, and ISO settings. As the light dims, we will begin putting what we learn into action, capturing the light trails of the cars crossing the bridge.

As dusk sets in, we will exit the park leaving with a better understanding of how our cameras work.

I have been teaching photography classes at the Orange-Ulster BOCES adult education center for 20 years. As an avid hiker and mountain biker, I spent my life gallivanting around the Hudson Valley, climbing every peak, investigating every crevasse and exploring every trail with camera in hand. I've hiked 1,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail and most of the trails that meander throughout the Hudson Valley. I know my camera inside and out and I know the area. My goal is to take you along with me on my next adventure and show you the proper techniques to capture the beauty in this grand part of this country.

Le lieu

Franny Reese Park is named after Frances “Franny” Reese (1917-2003), who dedicated much of her life to protecting the Hudson Valley’s natural and historic treasures. The trail winds through the forest to the top of the ridge where Rt. 44 cuts through the rock on the West side of the Hudson River. Trails follow a historic carriage road that passes ruins of a 19th-century estate, while an overlook affords superb views of the Mid-Hudson Bridge.

This was a most enjoyable and educational trip. Jeff is very knowledgable, and provided instruction with a light touch. He found a nice balance between teaching and recreation. We captured images that showed light trails from c are crossing the bridge, with good details in the clouds and the lights of the town. This was our 16 year olds first experience with taking long exposure photos with a camera mounted on a tripod, and I think that she is now ready to do something similar on her own. I would defiantly recommend this to any enthusiast who would like to learn about using long exposures.
