Piaras has a deep love and passion for the history, geography, ecology and folklore of the Reeks. He is a member and the current training officer with the volunteer Kerry Mountain Rescue team. He is a qualified Mountain Leader as well as a scrambling and rock-climbing guide and has been climbing these mountains for over 20 years with notable impressive first ascents to his name. Piaras works alongside his wife Catherine Kelly, a Search and Rescue Dog Association (SARDA) member and keen walker and mountaineer. They live with their two children, Orlaith and Tiernan in the shadow of the Reeks.

Le lieu

A challenging day and a good basic level of fitness is most definitely required.
Time: 6 hrs + approx

We will begin our walk from Cronin’s Yard and walk along a well worn track into the Hags Glen and the heart of “The Reeks”. Cronin’s Yard is synonymous with Corrán Tuathail, and for over 200 years has been used as the traditional starting point for ascents of Ireland’s highest mountain.

We have climbed several mountains over the years and are avid hikers. When we were first looking at Carrauntoohil it seemed pretty straightforward. It was not only much safer but going up together as a group but it changed the whole experience. We bonded quickly and were able to share in the experience together. Piaras has extensive knowledge and stories of the whole area that illuminated an already majestic location. Looking back, just by going up with Piaras alone, it turned what might of been just another summit into a unique and fulfilling experience that will never be forgotten.

What a super day. Catherine and team were brilliant in all communications - super fast responses and detailed to any concerns I had. Mike our guide was an absolute legend - he managed me through the climb with encouraging words to stop my nerves and was great at getting around to talk individually to all the group ( 8 of us ). He really made the trip with all his local knowledge and easy going style . He even radioed back to base when we came across an injured sheep on our walk through the valley. Bottom line - if you are in Kerry, do not miss this opportunity to climb one of Ireland’s most stunning mountains with a world class climbing team. It will stay with you as a memory for life!!
