Bachman’s Seafood was an oyster cannery, they had a fleet of six shrimp boats and 60 employees in their hay day. This site has a lot of history and a lot of character! From there it’s a short boat ride through the Stono Inlet with views of the Atlantic Ocean. You are very likely to see dolphins so keep a lookout while listening to the eco/ history talk along the way. Arriving at the farm we would haul up our gear and explain how the process works while showing examples of the stages of growth. CREW Tom- Captain Bachelors degree in Marine Science, Master Captain of vessels up to 100 tons in near coastal water. Tom has been giving eco tours for years while he was in the early stages of starting Charleston Oyster Farm. The dream has always been to have the farm serve also as an education platform. Peter- Mate BS in Geology Toms identical twin brother. Peter has a passion for sustainability and the Environment and is a great asset to the team Caitlyn- Mate BS in Geology and Masters in Environmental Science. Caitlyn is married to Peter and is also a professor at the College of Charleston. She has been teaching as an adjunct professor for undergrad geology courses and has recently developed an Applied Mariculture Course for the Graduate program in which the Lab portion of the class is taught at the our Farm Family O & O

Our Facility is an old Shrimp house and oyster cannery from the 1960’s and the Oyster Farm, which you can only access by boat, is about three miles away and is adjacent to a private island in the Stono River. Having that close proximity and also being close to the restaurants that we provide for makes us a very sustainable operation.

We will have a cooler full of ice and you can bring whatever food or drinks you want. Also a towel if it’s warm weather and you want to have a swim. Deer free bug spray only around the farm because it can affect small oysters.
