Au programme

Explore 19th-century Copenhagen through the eyes of world-famous author Hans Christian Andersen. You’ll get the full story of this ugly duckling’s transformation into the most widely read Danish writer of all time—from the humiliations and disappointments of his early years to finally finding the formula on how to become the beautiful swan he always knew he would be.
From the humble beginnings on the lowest steps of the social ladder to hanging out with royalty, Andersen worked tirelessly throughout his life to achieve his goals—and indeed he did. The first part of our walk will follow the path he took on his very first day in the city after arriving from his hometown of Odense in 1819, when he was only 14 years of age. You'll get the story of the strangest boy in town and how he made his way from rags to riches in a society where social mobility was almost nonexistent. Part two will give you the story of his fight to make it in the big city. You'll learn how he tried his luck as an actor, dancer, and singer before finally cashing in on his ability to befriend the right people. The final part of our stroll will concentrate on his first years as a struggling author and how the first of his famous fairytales came to life. There are no guarantees, but perhaps we'll get to sit on his bed and I'll tell you the very first fairytale he wrote—I'll bet you don't know it.

Like everyone else, I grew up loving the classic fairytales, including "The Ugly Duckling," "The Tinderbox," and "The Little Mermaid." I taught them for years and never grew tired of them. So in 2014, when I decided to quit working as a teacher and tell stories for a living, the story of this strange man was first on my list. Since then I’ve done this walk more than 300 times and each time, it’s like falling in love all over again. This year marks the 200th anniversary of Andersen's arrival in Copenhagen. For this reason, I have cut a little off the price and I've added extra dates to choose from.

A beautiful tour of getting to know H. C. Andersen as a person, an artist and a friend. I felt like Hans Christian himself was there, walking alongside us, sharing his life as we visited his dwellings and historical sites! What made the tour even more insightful was the facts of Copenhagen in its yesteryears to how it influenced Hans’s journey as a young boy to the end of his days. Highly recommended!

I highly recommend Mags tour of Copenhagen through the life and stories of Hans Christian Anderson. We saw so much of the city, learned a tremendous amount of history, and were entertained with fairy tales and the real life story of a rags to riches life. Mags is so kind and is super wonderful with children. He brings a sense of calm and intrigue to the tour that engages and delights. I think the tour is equally interesting and appropriate for adults and children and that Mags is gifted at knowing how to engage within and well beyond the scope of hir tour to meet the needs and interests of the group. To me, this was the best sort of walking tour!

This is a great walking tour: Mads is so knowledgeable and ready to answer all sorts of questions. He's very easy to understand and very personable. Despite the windy, cold weather, we absolutely loved it and would definitely recommend it.

This tour was fabulous! Mads is a skilled storyteller and really brought H.C. Andersen’s world to life. You get to visit some very special locations in pretty secret spaces that I didn’t expect but was delighted to visit. While learning about the author you also discover more about Copenhagen’s past. Mads made the tour extra special with a coffee stop. Mads is a super cool guy who gave great recommendations on other things to do in the city. I’m so happy that I did this tour. I think any tour conducted by Mads would be excellent.

The tour was ok. We didn't hear very surprising details about H.C. Andersen and the pace of the tour was a bit slow. It was a very hot day, that could be the reason for the slow tour though. We were surprised that the tour ended at the other end of the city... We left our bikes at the start, so we had to walk all the way back.
