Ce que vous allez faire

This workshop will be a deep dive into fermentation! You will learn how to brew beer from whole grains plus how to make sourdough bread using a SCOBY starter. From tasting and grinding whole grains to extracting sugars during starch conversion to sparging the grains, you will experience all steps of all-grain mash brewing. We'll cover topics like recipe development, the importance of good sanitation and different types of grains, yeast and hops. We don't like spending a lot of money on expensive brewing gear, so throughout the day we'll share DIY tips on keeping equipment costs to a minimum by making some of your own components. During quiet times in the brewing process, we'll walk you through the steps of making sourdough bread, from feeding the starter to making a leaven to baking. The workshop will include a delicious lunch made mostly from our own homegrown produce. in the afternoon we'll take another break while the beer cools and sample some different homebrews, along with sourdough bread & a selection of our own homemade jams. Everyone will take home sourdough starter, plus a choice of either our homegrown hops or a bottle of homebrew.

Bill and I have been learning self-sufficiency skills together for three decades. We love to grow organic fruits and vegetables for year-round eating, brew beer and cider, bake sourdough bread and make jam and pickles. We started brewing beer together in 1990 and have made hundreds of batches since then. Initially we brewed using the malt extract method, then graduated to making full-grain mash batches. We make a variety of ale styles including pale ale, stout, wheat, rye and red ale. We also grow our own hops to use in our handcrafted brews.

Le lieu

The homebrewing workshop will take place at the Treehouse, our beautiful home in the hills of Newfield, south of Ithaca. We built the house ourselves and it is sustainably built, passive solar and filled with natural light. The house number is on the mailbox - please drive slowly up the gravel driveway and park near the house.
