London has a rich LGBTQ+ history - from the "breaches roles" of the Victorian era to the mining and queer communities coming together to fight Thatcher's government in the 1980s to the opening of the world's first Black Lesbian and Gay Centre. London hosts Europe's biggest drag king competition and will soon be home to the first permanent LGBTQ+ homeless shelter. But it's also facing obstacles - with LGBTQ+ spaces rapidly closing down, and the Pride parade heavily criticised because of commercialisation and transphobia.

We'll begin in Trafalgar Square, where the UK's first gay Pride march took place. We'll then walk through the heart of the West End, where I'll point out historic sights for the queer and trans community, including squats, street art, Soho - the home of queer nightlife, and various points of protest and dissent. I'll tell you about the individuals and groups that shaped our history, and their legacies to this day. As well as looking back on our past, we'll explore what the present and future holds for London's LGBTQ+ community.

Hi, I'm Yas. I'm a queer, trans, cat-loving geek. I've lived in London my whole life (although I've moved around a bit!), and consider the city my home, but at some point I realised that all the history written down and taught to us in schools wasn't reflective of my past or community at all. I come from a family of Muslim migrants, and of course I'm LGBTQ+. I wanted to find out the queer and trans history of this city, and I'd love to share that with you. I'm a journalist by day, writing about LGBTQ+ issues, and a poet, campaigner and drag king by night. Come explore London town with me!

Le lieu

As well as being in busier areas like the main club district in Soho, we'll wonder through the backstreets of London, exploring popular old cottaging spots, the sites of closed down women's bars, protest locations and cute spots like Gay's The Word bookshop, still open today, that is steeped in history. I'm very involved in the current LGBTQ+ community in London and will recommend pubs, shows, campaigns and current exhibitions worth checking out.

The trip is very interesting and worth going! Yas told us a lot of histories about LGBTQ in London, and she also prepared some pictures and magazines to help us understand. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it to all of you!

Engaging and informative tour of soho. A thoroughly enjoyable few hours finding out in greater detail the history of LGBT rights and the struggles people went through. Yas was friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere on the tour was great, Yas's inclusive attitude meant we felt like a group of friends by the end of the evening. Thanks so much!
