Au programme

This cycling experience will introduce the amazing countryside of Kamo in rural Kyoto. We will travel on quiet tracks and roads used by locals.

We will start at JR Kamo train station with a free pick up to my house 5 minutes away where we will have a bike set up and briefing.

From my house we cycle along a river track with scenic views of the mountains. The route then starts to climb through the forests with a stop to see a 1000 year old stone carving of Buddha. The route continues up in the hills to Joururiji temple where we stop to see one of the oldest gardens in Japan and the stunning pagoda.
We then depart to see some more stone carvings hidden in the mountain paths before reaching Gansenji temple, also known as the hydrangea temple. After walking around the temple we return to Kamo all downhill on quiet roads.

Total distance cycling 14km. Elevation gain 300 m.

We will see many stone carvings of Buddha that can be found on the small trails in the mountains near to Kamo village. The most spectacular is almost 3 meters tall and 1000 years old.

We will visit Joruriji temple, founded in 1047 and home to one of the oldest gardens in Japan. It is designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty in Japan.

Finally we can relax and enjoy the peace at Gansenji temple famous for its beautiful plants and flowers.

We had a beautiful experience cycling through some very picturesque scenery. Visits to temples, stories and local knowledge that helped to give background to Buddhist rock carvings, agriculture and food produce. The lunch of delicious udon noodles at the top of the mountain was well earned after some steep hill climbs! Philip was a friendly and passionate host.

This is a wonderful experience. I struggled a bit with some of the hillier portions, but you got to see some things you will never discover on your own.

Riding with Philip in the hills south of Kyoto was a wonderful experience. Beautiful temples and stone carvings with hardly any tourists. A great insight into rural Japan and an excellent 1/2 day trip from Nara, Kyoto or Osaka. To explore the region more, one can stay at their guesthouse and hike or cycle around.

What a great experience! We've been to Japan many times before, we've seen many parts of the country and we're really looking for unique experiences. The tour with Philip was definitely worth it. He showed us some beautiful places, answered all our questions and made sure we're safe on the bikes. There were some really steep hills to conquer but the speed of the tour was adjusted to our fitness and abilities. I highly recommend this bike tour.

What a FANTASTIC experience cycling/hiking through the beautiful non-tourist Kizugawa area, where countryside of the Kyoto/Nara area. From the minute I booked, Philip went above and beyond the helpful tips for the tour. Philip was not only an excellent host/tour guide but he was a professional cyclist. The bike was easy to ride with only small climbs. During cycling, he was always behind my sister and I to make sure no one left behind . We didn't finish the 14km cycling route since my sister was not feeling well. Philip was very nice to modify our cycling route into hiking so my sister could continue to participate with us. He took us so many special places we never would have found such as many hidden stone carving of Buddha in the mountain paths and non-tourist temples with the oldest garden in Japan. He was able to explain the history behind each places we have stopped. We also got the chance to visit local farmer market and got some local homemade pickled vegetable and local tea. Cycling along with a river track with scenic view of the mountains was an amazing experience for people like us living in the city. In the end, we got to sit down and shared our experience with Philip and his wife Junko in their homey airbnb guest house for some coffee and Japanese sweet. It was a memorable late afternoon. This experience turned into one of our highlight for our weekly long Kansei region trip. I would definite recommend this amazing tour if you are looking for non-toursty experience of Koyot/Nara. Fantastic and 5 out of 5 supper airbnb experience!
