Ce que vous allez faire

My friends Katrin and Cesar will meet you in front of Santo Domingo church in downtown Oaxaca. From there it will take around 30 minutes to the Aleberije village Arrazola in their private car. Alebrijes in Arrazola? Maybe you only heard about San Martin Tilcajete when looking for Alebrijes, but the beginning of the tradition started here! In Arrazola, you will meet me, my wife Antonia and our son Alejandro at our workshop to show you the entire creation process of our amazing art: from carving the wood; making natural colors out of local fruits, insects and minerals to painting the figures in the traditional design with acrylic paint. Katrin and Cesar will translate into English or German if needed. Now the fun part starts. Time to get creative. You will choose a small plain wooden animal figure to paint yourself which could take up to 2 hours. Brushes and colors will be provided. This will be a lovely souvenir to take home and remember this experience! Besides all this, you can also check our gallery for more souvenirs. After we finished in Arrazola, Katrin and Cesar will take you back to the starting point. *** NEW: Paint your Skull for Day of the Dead *** Day of the Dead is coming! From October 14th to 25th you can paint your own copal wood skull with us! Instagram & Facebook @youralebrije Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gPwyWv4LpAk

Armando

Hi, my name is Armando. I live in Arrazola, the village where alebrijes were born, around 14 km away from Oaxaca City. It was my grandfather Manuel Jiménez, who became famous for his wooden alebrijes in 1950. Making alebrijes is my passion. I've been carving and painting the figures for more than 30 years. My entire family is into this beautiful art, like most families here in Arrazola. Together with my friends Cesar and Katrin, a German/Mexican couple I met through my work, we want to teach more people about our way to express emotions through the alebrijes work and welcome you in my village.

Le lieu

The workshop takes place in the front yard of my house. There is a cute area with tables and chairs under a roof to get creative. The gallery and two dogs are also part of the house.
