Au programme

Find out what you can eat in the woods! We'll hike in the lovely Santa Cruz mountains where I'll guide you on a beautiful, quiet 2.5-mile hike in the unique coastal oak & redwood forest. Together we'll learn the ancient ways of identifying edible and medicinal mushrooms, plants, roots, flowers, nuts and seeds (depending on the season). Along the way we'll discuss proper harvesting and preparation techniques while connecting to the beauty and abundance of our ecosystem.

This experience is a fun, hands-on way to connect to what can feed, heal and harm us in the wild. You'll walk away with a whole new appreciation and understanding of nature! The hike is doable for all skill levels. See you on the trail!

Other things to note:
Secure your own transportation to Verve Coffee and we'll caravan to the hike start. Bring: layers (it can get chilly in the redwoods), water bottle and comfortable hiking shoes. Optional: hiking poles, camera, hat, sunglasses.

I'm a Santa Cruz local, with over 10 years experience as a naturalist. I've traveled all over the world foraging and adventuring outdoors. I turned my passion into a business when I founded Mountain Sea Adventures, an outdoor adventure company connecting people to mother nature. My experience is not manufactured or forced, my routes are uncrowded and peaceful. For me, foraging is a way of life: we make a connection with our natural world through being nourished and healed by plants, mushrooms and trees.

Highly recommend! Caitlin teaches in a way that feels like you’re catching up with an old friend who’s excited of sharing everything they know. Really engaging and knowledgeable. I advise taking notes on your phone or paper because there is so much interesting things to learn that you’ll want to try to retain as much as possible. Also, bring a ziplock or small reusable bags or jars, so you can forage along the way. You won’t regret it :)

Caitlin is incredibly knowledgeable and gregarious! She took the time to get to know everyone and why we were there before we headed to our destination. Once there, she had impressive knowledge of the history of the land and ecosystem of Santa Cruz. Throughout the hike she would point out and contextualize medicinal and edible plants, taking great care to emphasize safety and plant identification. She was a lovely guide and an engaging teacher whose reverence for the natural landscape was apparent. She led us through California’s rapidly-changing ecosystems with ease and expertise. I would absolutely take another class with her and would suggest the experience to anyone with an interest in hiking and identifying plants.

This experience was so awesome. I was a little nervous just because you have no idea who else will be in the group but Caitlin has such a great way of breaking the ice and getting everyone to mingle. We learned so much and made plant friends along the way. If you decide to book your experience, bring a little notebook and pen. You'll want to write a lot of the plant names down. Also, be on time! One group was late and Caitlin had to take time catching them up taking away time from the actual hike. Will definitely be booking another experience if we're in the area again.

It was a wonderful experience to go and learn about foraging with Caitlin. We learnt so many new things and will try to apply the newfound knowledge in our future foraging! Thank you Caitlin!
