Au programme

Find out what you can eat in the woods! We'll hike in the lovely Santa Cruz mountains where I'll guide you on a beautiful, quiet 1-3-mile walk in the unique coastal oak & redwood forest. Together we'll learn the ancient ways of identifying edible and medicinal mushrooms, plants, roots, flowers, nuts and seeds (depending on the season). Along the way we'll discuss proper harvesting and preparation techniques while connecting to the beauty and abundance of our ecosystem.

This experience is a fun, hands-on way to connect to what can feed, heal and harm us in the wild. You'll walk away with a whole new appreciation and understanding of nature! The hike is doable for all skill levels. See you on the trail!

Other things to note:
Secure your own transportation to The Buttery and we'll caravan to the hike start. Bring: layers (it can get chilly in the redwoods), water bottle and comfortable hiking shoes. Optional: hiking poles, camera, hat, sunglasses.

I'm a Santa Cruz local, with over 10 years experience as a naturalist. I've traveled all over the world foraging and adventuring outdoors. I turned my passion into a business when I founded Mountain Sea Adventures, an outdoor adventure company connecting people to mother nature. My experience is not manufactured or forced, my routes are uncrowded and peaceful. For me, foraging is a way of life: we make a connection with our natural world through being nourished and healed by plants, mushrooms and trees.

Caitlin did an excellent job with sharing her approach with the natural world. She showed us that medicinal plants and edible mushrooms are everywhere around us. We just need to tune in to notice them!

I am very dissatisfied with the event. When I booked it a month ago, it was 3 hours from 12 to 3pm. Host changed the time to 10 - 12:30 without asking whether the new time was convenient to us or not. It was also shortened to 2.5 hours and the reason didn't sound convincing to me. I left home at 8:20am to arrive on time at 10am, but host was late by 22 minutes, which I felt was disrespectful. She sent an email to say she's late at 9:53am and we've already arrived. Would appreciate a sooner notice. I also felt the flow and pace of the event can be improved, because effective foraging time was only about 1 hour. For example, we first met at a cafe, then again at a nearby trail head. Why not meet at the park so we can get started right away. We spent time smelling several jars of mushrooms, but that's not what I am coming for. Host showed us books she finds useful, and I felt she could take a picture of the books and sent to us before the event. We wasted a lot of time and only walked 0.5 mile according to my smart watch. For an event scheduled for 2.5 hours, we received 1 hour effective foraging time and a late start. I don't think she extended the end time by 22 minutes by the way. I am very disappointed for the 6 hours I spent including commute from and to the peninsula.

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful foraging experience with Caitlin. It was a beautiful day in Santa Cruz and we found lots of tastry trail snacks along the way. We were also lucky to have found different varieties of mushrooms. Caitlin was knowledgeable and I really like her energy. I highly recommend this experience.

All nature lovers should experience a hike like this. It has made me more mindful and aware of my surroundings - what can help, what can harm, etc. I feel more confident walking through the woods now and more connected. I took lots of notes and pictures on my phone and can't wait to explore more. Caitlin's passion shone through and she helped guide us technically, emotionally, and mentally in the forest.

What a delightful afternoon learning about what the Californian ecosystem had to offer. We learned a great deal from Caitlin. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about the planet and our relationship with nature. We used what we learned on our next hike and I’m sure we’ll continue our learning in the future. Thank you Caitlin! Especially for introducing us to our new friend - sheep sorrel. Yum!
