We (Nina and Moritz) are a couple with a lovely little son. As modern life wants it, we are often commuting due to job, so we sometimes share our great flat with nice Berlin visitors. Its a cosy and bright 83qm space in the heart of lovely Friedrichshain. 2nd floor, huge bedroom for 2, balcony, great kitchen and big bath

The flat is large and nicely decorated with a classy and minimalistic touch. It is located in a trendy area with plenty of restaurants, bars and shops just few minutes walk. The room is super large, with big windows which allows the sun to get in. The bathroom and the kitchen are also big. Nina is a delicious host, who can give you tips on the neighborhood.

This was a very difficult trip to rate. On one had the apartment is lovely. It is very large, well decorated and clean. There is a lovely garden outdoors that we enjoyed sitting in when the sun was out. However, we experienced a lot of difficulties as one night we accidentally lost the keys to the apartment, the host was not in town and left no local contacts in case of emergencies and left no spare keys in Berlin. We paid $273 USD to a locksmith in order to get into the apartment (after sitting outside in the cold for several hours). The host didn't refund us for this amount. I've never lost a key before and would expect to pay a small replacement fee for a spare, but covering a $273 charge was too much for us. Since there was no spare key to enter the building as well (there are three doors total to get into the apartment), we were stuck in the flat until 4 PM the next day as we were afraid to leave and not be able to re-enter the building. Nina was able to connect us with her neighbor who said we could call her and she would let us in anytime before 11 PM but she was unavailable when we called around 9:30 PM so we had to hit all of the call buttons for the building until someone answered who spoke English and was willing to let us in. All in all it was a very stressful experience. I think the stay would have been perfect if Nina was in town or left a co-host who was well equipped to handle scenarios like this. Right now we are leaving Berlin having missed out on several tourist attractions we wanted to see and with much emptier pockets than expected given the $273 locksmith charge.

Let me give my response to this. First and foremost, as I would like to continue keeping the good spirit as a host, I would like to say that besides the (for us as hosts as well) bad key experience, Alex was a respectful guest and left the flat clean. In the spirit of positive attitude I actually wrote her a 5-star review, in spite of the unpleasant situation, I have to handle: the loss of a special key, the whole day arrangements with the neighbours so she can still enjoy her stay in Berlin, the huge penalty fee we have to pay to the landlord, and last but not least - the cost of a new pair of keys for each flat in the whole building block. Loosing the building key poses a very serious security issue to the host and the community in the whole apartment block. To increase the security, the landlord of the building has implemented a second door to lock out strangers. Alexandria and her companion lost a key at 4am in the morning in expected cold weather conditions in Berlin, which is a pity but not the fault of the host, on the contrary - a responsibility of the guest. Even if there would be a spare key in the neighbourhood it would not be easy to make it available at this time - people cannot be woken up during the night to bring keys somewhere. The fee of emergency locksmith of $273 is not a small amount of money for anybody, but finally a normal charge for any service you ask for in the early hours of the day. In addition to this, Alexandria also did not wait for me to find another solution and directly called the locksmith herself. To summarise our point, Airbnb is a trustful community of hosts, and not a 24h hotel service with concierge, so when a host is losing keys to a private apartment during a night out, responsibility has to be taken on both sides. I see Alexandria's point that having a spare key is a helpful and necessary detail which we will, as hosts, make sure to make available in the neighbourhood next time. Yet - dear guests, we are looking forward to host you - but take care of our keys during nights out :)!

Ninas Wohnung liebt optimal in Friedrichshain.
