"This is the best holiday house we've had so far", my wife said, and I agree with her. The house (though not overly cheap to rent) is charming, large, and stuffed with all the amenities you will need. The views of the fjord, the mountains on the other side and the outliers of the glacier can't be beaten. Our kids loved the playthings, the garden and the ice cream from the camp site opposite.
Lofthus is a nice, friendly place filled with apple orchards and helpful folks. We enjoyed the pool at the Ullensvang Hotel and the fjord beach (though it was too chilly to swim in this rainy August ). There is a small supermarket, too, not far away.
Lofthus is also a good center base for exploring the area - the Hardangervidda highlands, numerous waterfalls, towns like Utne or Odda, the Folgefonna glacier. We even made a long day trip to Bergen. Be aware, though, that most attractions are at least an hour away, so you will probably do a lot of driving on often narrow, winding roads.
Emely was working in Oslo while we were staying in the house, but she was always reachable and helpful, and wrote a very detailed intro to the house and the vicinity. We were met by Johan, who at 75 still runs the apple farm around the house, and his wife Wenche. They are the most charming of people, brought us maps, fresh fruit, and Legos for our sons. Both speak good English and contributed a great deal to making this a very memorable week.
