Tom and I are both practicing artists. We split our time between Portland, Maine (my hometown) and London (Tom’s hometown) with the help of Airbnb. Since we’re on the other side of the pond, our friend Jason will be your host and point of contact for your visit. If you have any concerns or questions, he’ll be happy to help.
Getting Into The House:
Our house has three entrances, but we only use one! We enter through the back of the house. Walk down the drive at the side of the house. You’ll see a wooden garden gate. Go through the garden gate, you’ll see a door on your right. The lockbox is on the door. The keys are inside. (Jason will give you the code). This takes you straight into our living room. This door can be a pain to open and lock in the winter. If it’s being too stubborn, you can use the front door. The other key on the ring operates the top bolt lock on the front door.
Please read the safety card attached to the refrigerator door for emergency contacts and procedures.
Please make sure all DOWNSTAIRS windows are CLOSED when you leave the house.
This is an old house. We love it for that reason. But, old houses are fickle. Please TAKE CARE on the stairs, they are STEEP. We’ve equipped them with motion sensor lights to help guide the way at night, but we recommend holding the railings.
We’ll be the first to admit, this house isn’t very child friendly. We don’t have kids. We are more than happy for children to stay, but it is at the renter’s risk.
There is a FIRST AID KIT in the sink cabinet of the 1st. floor bathroom.

The modem is located in the living room, next to the television. The box labeled ARRIS. If it needs to be reset, just unplug it and plug back in again after 30 seconds.
We have cable as well as HBO. You’ll find HBO at channel 510 upwards.
The TV needs two remotes. The silver one works the TV (turning on, volume) and the black one works the cable box (turning on, changes channels, guide). Same is true for third floor television.
We have to rely a lot on lamps in this house, as many of the rooms don’t have overhead lighting. For that reason, the house is fitting with motion light sensors on the ground to help guide you to lamps, but we recommend keeping a lamp on in the lounge.
During your stay, the heat will be set at 68 degrees for day and night. Our thermostat runs on a timer, so if for any reason, you’d like more or less heat, contact Jason for help.
There are NO RADIATORS on the third floor. There is a SPACE HEATER in the room that warms it pretty quickly. We suggest turning it on about thirty minutes before you intend to go to bed. We ask that you please turn it off if you intend to be out of the room for most of the day. It can be turned off and on by hitting the power button TWICE. It will count to 60 when turning off.
The two rooms on the second floor do get warmer than the 1st floor. Just one of the quirks of an old house.
GAS STOVE IN THE LOUNGE: Turns on by the remote on the top of the stove. Pilot should already be lit. Just one single button to turn it off and on. The top most button on the remote. Any questions, ask Jason.
We love to read and have an extensive collection, particularly of art books. Please feel free to borrow any of the books on our shelves.
Recycling: Cardboard, paper, plastics and metals can all go into the blue recycling bin next to the radiator in the kitchen.
Bins: just to the left of the sink is a cabinet door with a horizontal handle. When you open it, you’ll find two bins. The FRONT BIN is for TRASH. For this bin, we use PURPLE CITY OF PORTLAND TRASH BAGS which can be found under the sink. The BACK BIN is for RETURNABLE BOTTLES AND CANS.
Trash and recycling collection happens early Wednesday morning. All you need to do is leave the blue recycling bin and the purple City of Portland trash bag outside the front door of the house on TUESDAY NIGHT. If you have any questions or prefer Jason to handle the trash and recycling, please ask.
If it’s in the kitchen, then it’s there for you to use! There are also a selection of spices on the blue cubby shelf in the dining room. Please help yourself. The bookshelf is the dining room also has lots of cookbooks. Please use them!
The switch for the garbage disposal is the first switch to the left of the sink. Please keep water running in the sink until you turn it off.
Dishwasher: It should be pretty self explanatory. “Normal Wash” works for just about everything. Just press that, then “start.” Dishwasher tabs are located under the sink.
Stove: We have a gas stove/range. When you’re finished using the burners make sure you turn the knob to THE LEFT to turn off the flame. Also, TOP TIP it often takes a little longer to cook things in the oven than a recipe suggests.
There are a WASHER AND DRYER in the basement for your use. Everything else in the basement is our personal property. Please respect it by leaving it alone.
Stairs: Our stairs are both NARROW and STEEP. It’s part of the charm of an old house, but understandably not for everyone. Please be advised if you have trouble climbing stairs, that the bedrooms are on the second and third floors.
Bathrooms: Bathrooms are located on the 1st. and 2nd. floors ONLY. There is no bathroom attached to the third floor bedroom. Please be advised you may have walk down a flight of stairs in the night. They’re are motion sensor lights on the stairs, but be please TAKE CARE and use railings. Also, please note, we have an ON DEMAND WATER HEATER. This means it will take 30 SECONDS for the shower to get warm. After that, endless hot water.
Bedrooms: Third floor bedroom: This room has a queen-sized bed. There is nice big dresser, but limited closet space. We recommend using the closets in the second floor study for anything you need to hang. Linens for this room are kept in the cubby closet, to the right of the stairs, as you come up. To heat this room, turn on the space heater about 30 minutes before you want to go to bed. Hit power button TWICE to turn it on and off. It heats up pretty quickly. Second floor bedroom: This room has a double bed. It also has a small desk, two closets and a few small drawers.
Study: The room to the left on the second floor, as you come up the stairs, is my studio/office. We keep this room free of sleeping arrangements, because it has the only access to the second floor bathroom. Please use the desk, however, I’ve covered the surface to protect the wood! Please DO NOT remove the fabric.
Laundry: We have a washer and dryer in the basement. Both very eco-friendly units. Washing tabs are located on the dryer. We suggest that when you put your clothes in the washer, spread them to the sides of the drum, so the bottom, central part of the drum is visible. This helps the machine determine how much water to use. This is a good place to drop the laundry detergent tab.
Children: We don’t have children, so the house is not equipped or proofed for children. Children are welcome to stay at the house, but be advised you’ll need to bring EVERYTHING they’ll need.
IT’S SNOWING!: Don’t panic! We have hired someone who will come shovel you out. Please be patient, though. If you need to get out quick, there is a shovel next to the back door.
Smoking: Absolutely NO SMOKING in our house. Please smoke in the garden. There is a flower pot with sand on the back deck. And one on the upper deck. Please dispose of all cigarettes here.
Guests: We understand you may have visitors during your stay, but we ask that you keep it to a maximum of FOUR PEOPLE staying at the house. NO HOUSE PARTIES. This is a built up neighborhood, please respect the neighbors and watch noise levels.
Pets: Sorry, no pets.
