À propos de ce logement
Quinta da Vila Maria is a former wine merchant’s country house, located in the beautiful and unspoilt countryside of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, near to the historic towns of Portalegre, Marvão and Castelo de Vide. Built around 1900, the architecture of this country house is unique for this area. It has been lovingly restored with modern and comfortable facilities but still retains its original Art deco and other period features, such as the beautiful tile floors, large rooms, high ceilings and wood shutters.
Apartment “Kiwi” is for 2 guests and has countryside views of olive and cork trees. It has a bright and spacious bedroom with a large double bed (1.6 x 2m), an en-suite bathroom with shower, a living area and a well equipped kitchenette/dining area with breakfast bar, hob/stovetop, fridge with freezer compartment, microwave oven/grill, toaster, kettle, crockery, cutlery, glasses, pots and pans. Apartment “Kiwi” has high ceilings giving it a light and airy feel, spacious and contains everything you need for a comfortable holiday. The apartment has free WiFi.
There is a large terrace at the front of the house - the perfect place in the evening to have dinner or enjoy a glass of wine. During the day sunbathe and relax on the pond terrace accompanied only by birdsong, the gentle burble of water and the croaking of the frogs. Or if you prefer shade, relax on the “linden tree” terrace or beneath one of the many olive, cork or fruit trees. One of the olive trees is reportedly over 1000 years old. And when you want to stretch your legs you are welcome to walk around the Quinta’s vineyard and land, which is there for guests to enjoy.
The vineyard, which is organic, has many grape vines that are in the region of 100 years old. Being a traditional Portuguese vineyard the vines are not on wires but grow freely like a bush. In early spring, after pruning, they look like sculptures, all gnarled and twisted, an interesting study for those who like drawing or painting. Later in spring the vineyard and pasture are carpeted in wildflowers, a valuable food source for bees and other insects. The old adega, which is now reception, still has the antique clay amphora/pots that many years ago were used to make red wine.
If you are interested in nature, animals and birds seen, or heard, at the Quinta include lizards, geckos, frogs, toads, bats, bee-eaters, booted eagles, blackcaps, cattle egrets, little owls, nightingales, red starts and treecreepers, with many more to be seen in the surrounding area of the Natural Park.
Quinta da Vila Maria is officially licensed as a Turismo no Espaço Rural – Casa de Campo (RNET 3534).

We moved to the Alentejo area of Portugal in 2010 having lived in New Zealand for 20 years. We chose this part of Portugal because we wanted to have space around us, fresh air and be in a beautiful, peaceful rural location with plenty of things to see and do. Portalegre and the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park give us all of this.
When we bought Quinta da Vila Maria the house was quite neglected and the land very overgrown but in spite of this we fell in love with the beautiful floor tiles and Art Deco elements in the house, the wonderful views, the adega and the vineyard but most of all the feeling of calm and peace that is everywhere. Having restored the house and tamed the land we hope to welcome you to our home and share this wonderful part of Portugal with you.
