I'm am the sole proprietor at Casa Sally and I live on the property. I truly enjoy the presence of my guests and I feel like I am here to take care of you, yet at the same time I know how to leave you alone too if that's what you want! I am available to give you any tips and advice you may need. My goal is to help make your vacation as easy, relaxing, and enjoyable as possible. And last but not least.....mi casa es su casa!!!

Tulum is a small town that used to be nothing more than a highway, a few palapas and a bunch fishermen. It has grown into what is today in only the past 20 years, and it consists of essentially two distinctive parts, the town (pueblo) and the beach, which is about a 10 or so km stretch of hotels and restaurants and their corresponding beaches. The development in Tulum has been pretty random, and when I bought my land where Casa Sally is now, it was the jungle and a crappy dirt road with about a 15 min bumpy ride to the town center. My neighborhood, La Valeta as it has now called, surprisingly became one of the fastest growing and most quickly developing neighborhoods over the past 5 years. That said, I’m trying to give you a feel of what to expect here now. The neighborhood, being on the south side of the Pueblo is about 6 km from the beach. La Valeta still has mostly dirt roads...but now it has three paved roads, two coming in from Avenida Tulum, and one principal street, Calle 7. The paved road ends about two blocks from my house, but all of them are well lit with street lights. The neighborhood now has an eclectic mix of modern condos/hotel’s, luxury private homes, regular private homes, little Mayan palapas and a few “abbarotes” (Mexican corner stores). There is still a ton of jungle and green space and it is just generally a mix of foreigners and Mexicans, tourists and locals. From my house it is now only about a 3 minute drive to town, 5 to 10 by bike and a leisurely 20 min or so walk. After living here for over 3.5 years, I find the hood to be pretty safe and friendly, at least that’s been my personal experience. Hopefully you have a good idea of what to expect so there are no surprises.....personally, I love the fact that I am just a little away from the town center, where I can still see and hear the birds in the morning a have a little taste of the more natural surroundings that La Valeta offers.

The neighborhood is fairly close to town, about a 20 min. walk, 10 min. by bike, or 5 min. by car. Tulum Pueblo is, about 3km (north side) to 7 km (southern side) from the beach, and Casa Sally is about 6.5 km from the beach. I do recommend that you organize either a bicycle or car rental in order to make getting around easier. The other option is to use a taxi service. I will have phone numbers to give you if you choose to use this option.

All suits in Casa and Casita Sally come supplied with 100% cotton towels and sheets. The kitchen is supplied with quality cookware, appliances, and everything you may need in a kitchen to cook meals.

La casa es muy comoda..esta un poco alejada de la playa, tener movilidad propia es fundamental.. en cuanto al barrio, es muy tranquilo.. ideal para parejas y familias.

It's a bit of a hike by foot to town, but we loved the hike and recommend it; we didn't rent a car but taxis and collectivos made the transit easy. Very oasis-like and peaceful place to stay

Sehr empfehlenswert!

We had a great week at Casa Sally! The communication with Jessica was excellent. She always answered very quickly via or e-mail. She welcomed us with two coronas in the fridge! The apartment is very clean and the space is bigger as it seems. I loved the shower! The bed is very comfortable. The kitchen well equipped. The neighborhood is very calm. I would recommend visitors to rent a car to get to the house from Cancún or to go to the beaches in Tulúm as you can only get there by taking the main roads. By bike it´s a long way, walking impossible. Also to get to the main street where you can find a lot of restaurants and shops you have to walk some blocks and it´s quite dark at night. So renting a car is the best option! Thanks for everything. Hope to come back soon!

Jessica's apartment was clean and modern, which made for a very comfortable stay in Tulum. It's about a 15-20 minute walk to the main strip in Tulum which isn't too bad either. Taxi's are also very easy to come by. Would highly recommend to others!

Jessica's place was definitely our favorite spot in Tulum. We're a family of 4 and the accommodations were perfect. Very clean and spacious, also a very safe neighborhood. Jessica provided a binder of very helpful suggestions for places to eat and things to see. Snorkeling at Dos Ojos and Akumal was spectacular. I highly recommend this place - we're already planning our next trip.

My Short story about becoming a Host:

I am a Canadian and I have been living in Mexico since September 2012. My first time in Tulum was in 1998, it was my first time traveling alone and my first time on a big trip. My goal at the time was to explore what the Lonely Planet Guidebook called "La Ruta Maya", but I ended up spending most of the three month trip on the beach here in Tulum because I thought I had found paradise, which I had! I traveled here many times after that for my vacations, always staying at cheap cabanas on the beach (those days are almost gone here now), and finally in 2008 I realized my dream and bought land here in La Valeta, which was almost completely Jungle at the time. I built my first house, the casita, in 2011 and I lived there for the first two years that I was here. My dream was to build a second house, but I definitely procrastinated on that one.....but finally Casa Sally came to fruition in January 2016. Now I have my two houses, both named after my late Mom, who was a beach lover herself. My former career in Canada was as a make-up artist for film and television. I did that job for 17 years and I was ready to make a change when I finally made the decision to move here in 2012. It was a risk, but I'm glad I did it because I love Tulum just as much as ever even though it is not the sleepy little pueblo I encountered when I first set foot on that amazing beach in 1998. The trip here to Mexico in '98 was also the first trip leading to a lifelong love of traveling. Since then I have been to Southeast Asia 3 times, Argentina twice, Central America, the Caribbean, Cuba and a few countries in Europe. I still have a huge list of places in the world that I want to see and experience, so as you can see traveling is in my blood and I am sure that hosting travelers will be another great new experience.

My short story about being a traveler:

I really only started traveling when I was 26, even though I had dreamed of doing it since I was kid. Growing up in Regina, Saskatchewan and living through some of the worst winters on earth definitely fed my dreams of sun, sand and sea. Traveling the world, most of the time solo, definitely changed my life and who I am now as a person. I really think that all the challenges faced, the people encountered, the cultures experienced and the good and bad times had, well this was my greatest life education. In terms of being a traveler, I suppose I like what most people do; architecture, historical sites, natural beauty, great new cuisines, the diversity of different cultural traditions. But I think one of the greatest aspects of traveling is the diverse people that one can encounter, and the way the traveling can help you to open up. I definitely became a more social person because of my experiences on the road alone. To this day I love to just hang out with people and talk over a coffee or drinks.....still one of my favorite past times. I am definitely not a type A personality and I'm pretty good at doing nothing at all, just relaxing. I'm rarely bored and I can definitely give lessons on how to be a good beach bum. As far as being a guest, no matter where, I respect the space I am in and the people around me. I'm also a clean freak, not to the level of neurosis though! I've stayed in some pretty nasty places over the years and I can tolerate a lot, but these days, now that I'm in my 40's, I like to have a decent accommodation (ie, clean, and relatively quiet) and my hostel days are mostly behind me.
