Description

A quiet idyllic hideaway bordering a bird sanctuary in rural Sri Lanka.

Frangipani House was built as a private holiday retreat for its owners, their friends and those who value simple living, privacy and nature. It is therefore first and foremost a home that also tries to capture the feeling of being close to nature.
A long airy building sited on four acres of land adjoining the Kalametiya bird sanctuary, it has three cozy bedrooms each with a queen sized double bed and two house can comfortably accommodate up-to 10 people including children. All linen, crockery and cutlery is provided. Meals are home cooked by our caretaker's Mum. These honest, wholesome village meals are infused with the great taste of rural Sri Lankan cooking, the likes of which you will never experience in the city. The house has basic self-catering facilities adequate for preparing simple meals and beverages ( tea, coffee). Provisions, fuel and basic medicines are readily available at the Hungama bazaar. Additionally, an early morning visit to the beach, when the fishing boats return, is always an experience and will enable you to obtain your stocks of fresh fish, crabs and lobsters. Our caretaker will assist you in obtaining your goods as required.

Getting there:
Travel towards Hungama village which lies 215 k.m from Colombo on the Colombo to Hambantota road. Once past Tangalle and Ranna, the road to Kalametiya is on the right just after the 214 k.m post, before you reach the Hungama Bazaar. It is clearly sign posted.

About Kalametiya:
Kalametiya is a coastal wetland area situated in the picturesque southeast of Sri Lanka, in the district of Hambantota. It is especially rich in its bio-diversity. It, along with Rekawa and Ussangoda, forms an area known as “Ruk," a coastal belt of land of outstanding beauty littered with numerous bays, coves, lagoons, rocky outcrops and sandy beaches, stretching from approximately Tangalle to Hambantota.
The Kalametiya lagoon itself is a brackish water body situated approximately 215 k.m on the Colombo to Hambantota road. It lies adjoining the Hungama village. Extensive reed beds, forests of Mangrove and other wetland trees and salt marshes fringe this engagingly beautiful lagoon.
The flood plain, reed beds and Mangrove forests around the Kalametiya lagoon are home to an extensive range of Sri Lanka's rich array of indigenous bird life and other fauna. It also regularly attracts numerous species of migrant birds such as Garganey and Pintail Duck, Redshanks, Godwits and Snipe. It was declared a sanctuary in 1984 and designated a “Special Area Management Site" under the Coastal Zone Management Plan for sustainable development.

Things to do: Bird watching – Stroll quietly around the 4 acres of wooded land at Frangipani Lodge and you will be astounded by the variety of birds you will see. Pay special attention to the array of smaller birds you might otherwise miss. For the more adventurous and active, a longer stroll on the banks of the lagoon, along its reeds and Mangroves, will open up a vista of waders and water birds.
Boating on the lagoon – Boat rides along the lagoon to see the birds and other water fauna in their natural habitat, or just to take in the ambiance of the wetlands, can be arranged. Just ask our caretaker to do the needful. Game fishing – Kalametiya is an excellent coastal fishing location offering keen anglers the opportunity to target a range of game fish including Tuna, Spanish mackerel, Trevally, Barracuda, Sailfish and Grouper. These can be fished off the beach or rocks near the lagoon mouth or by trolling off a boat. If you are lucky you might even catch a sight of Dolphins and Whales that frequent these waters. Boat hires will have to be negotiated but our caretaker will assist in this as required. Fishing tackle is not provided so do bring your own and the use of personal safety equipment, e.g. life vests, is strongly recommended. Remember also to protect yourself from the sun and to take plenty of fluids when you are out at sea. Places of interest – Well located, Frangipani is a great base for exploring this region. Places of interest include Ussangoda that offers stunning views of the surrounding coastline, the blowhole at Kudawella, the Madunagala hot springs and several ancient temples in the area including the Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya. For wildlife enthusiasts the Ridiyagama tank, another area rich in bird life and which is a very pleasant drive via Ambalantota is of special interest. Other major national parks such as Udawalawe, Bundala and Yala can also be easily accessed from Frangipani Lodge. Rekawa beach, well known for the Turtles that come ashore there to lay their eggs, is also close by.
