A Washington post article describes our neighborhood like this: “Think of it as an island of calm off North Capitol's busy axis." We couldn't agree more. Read the article to get a feel for the neighborhood (search for "The Stronghold Neighborhood of Northeast DC" and click the Washington Post article).
Our neighborhood is very diverse in every way, as is all of D.C., and most urban centers in the United States.
The neighborhood is an extension of Bloomingdale called Stronghold. It is a small and quiet neighborhood with friendly neighbors. Guests need to be very conscious and respectful of the neighbors (no loud noise at night).
The U.S. Capitol is visible from the end of our street and is 2.5 miles away. The White House is 3 miles away.
There are many nearby options for eating and shopping:
A 15-min walk in one direction takes you to the heart of Bloomingdale, where you will find excellent neighborhood restaurants and bars, including Big Bear Cafe, Rustik Tavern, and Red Hen as well as a yoga studio, and a farmer's market during the summer and fall.
A 20-minute walk in another direction takes you to the campus of Catholic University, which features a brand new arts and entertainment development called Monroe Market with artists' studios, restaurants, a Barnes & Noble bookstore, a seasonal farmer's market and live music on Thursdays and Fridays. There's also nearby dance classes and yoga/pilates.
A nearby bus will get you to the 11th Street ‘hip strip' in 7 minutes and Columbia Heights neighborhood/Metro Station in 10 minutes where your day or night life will kick into high gear! Everything is there: coffee shops, fast casual food options, nicer restaurants, and more. Our favorites are Meridian Pint, Maple, Red Rocks, Pho 14, and The Coupe.
We are also within walking distance to Washington Hospital Center and Children's National Hospital for families who need a place to stay for easy access to loved ones who may be there.
We are also within walking distance of Catholic University, Howard University, and Trinity College.
We are uniquely located in a quiet area that maximizes the possibilities of where you can go while minimizing cost and noise. DC is a small city (many of the attractions are within 3 miles). DC is also very bike friendly and we think that's the best way to get around and see the city. We do not own a car and bike everywhere (work, grocery store, bars, you name it). Transportation options:
- We are a 7 minute walk from a great service called ‘Capital Bike Share.' Hop on one of their bikes and then drop it off at one of the 300 locations around the city 24/7. When it's time to come home you can grab another bike and drop it off at the station near us. We HIGHLY recommend you try this if you are touring the monuments in the capital as it will save you a lot of time and money. Even our 65 year old parents did it!
- DC has an excellent public transportation system. The popular search engine that starts with a G provides excellent public transportation instructions in DC.
- A 20 minute walk will get you to the Brookland Metro Station; alternately, we are located within sight of two major bus lines in DC - the east to west H1,H2,H3,H4 bus lines that go through Columbia Heights and Adams Morgan AND the north to south 80 Bus line that heads to H ST, Union Station, the U.S. Capital Building/National Mall, and heart of the city around the White House. This means you can get almost anywhere in the city (and back) for about $2 via bus.
- Finally, Uber and Lyft are popular car services in D.C. and are quite cheap. Just download the apps on your phone and you can get almost anywhere for less than $15. (For $20 free credit use code VICTOR2711 for Lyft and for $15 free credit use g0s9n for Uber!)
Kitchen: The kitchen has a hot plate, toaster oven, mini refrigerator, and microwave.
Access/Mobility Concerns: There are several steps from the sidewalk up to the house and then another few down to the front entrance of the apartment. Also, this is an English basement and while the ceiling height is generous in the main living areas, there are a few bulkheads, which may prove troublesome for those who are over 6 foot 2.
Noise: We live in a beautiful historic row house so while the apartment ceiling is well-insulated, sound may travel a bit. We'll be sure not to host a dance party while you are staying with us, and ask that you show us the same courtesy.
Timing: Check-in is anytime after 3:00pm, check-out is 11:00am.
Chores: Basic cleaning supplies are provided we hope you will respect our home and keep it tidy during your stay.
Public transit cards: SmartTrip cards (for much easier use of the bus and metro/subway) available in the apartment for purchase or use.
This is our home and we are happy to have you as guests! Please treat our home as you would treat your own.
Check-in is after 3pm and check-out is by 11am.
Please treat our neighbors with respect and keep the noise levels down during sleeping hours.
Absolutely no smoking inside the apartment.
If you have any questions please ask! We love this place and think you will too!

Currently, I (Stacy) spend most of my time developing plans to open a charter school in Washington DC for low-income and under-represented populations. Previously, I was Deputy Director of a White House program called the Presidential Innovation Fellows, coordinated a tech fellows program at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and fought human trafficking at the Department of Homeland Security. I love meeting new people, especially those who want to make the world a better place. I'm an avid yogi.
