Waterfall Villa is the perfect place if you love the outdoors, hiking, jungle and all the wildlife, rivers and waterfalls it has to offer. Its location is amazing in the jungle of Baru in Cascada Azul. Not suitable for elderly or small children.

Le logement

Waterfall Villa & Jungle Retreat offers 2 bedrooms. The first includes a double bed, night tables, lighting, shelving for clothes, as well as a large trunk style safe with pad locks and key. The second bedroom includes 2 twin beds, night table, towel racks, as well as shelving for clothes. The living space includes a futon style sofa bed for additional bed space as well as a recently updated bathroom with standup shower, 4 towels included, pedestal sink, toilette shelving. Also, a small kitchenette with Fridge, hotplate, toaster oven, coffee maker, pots/pans, dishes, utensils etc. The roads are in good condition but a 4x4 is necessary to get to the property as the roads are very steep and winding.. It's not the best location for small kids as the house is made of screen and there are several drop-offs of over 20 feet. I would say 10 years and older should be fine.

Accès des voyageurs

Guests have access to the whole house as well as the grounds... a full 5 acres.

Its location is amazing in the jungle of Baru in the gated community of Cascada Azul. Walk to the waterpark with a 220 foot waterfall in only 10 minutes and it's only a 15 minute drive to the small surfer's town and beach of Dominical. Other attractions in the area include Nauyaca Waterfall only a 5 min. drive up the mountain (includes a horseback ride as well as lunch). There's a reptile park called Parque Reptilandia just up the street from Nauyaca Waterfall where you'll find botanical gardens, and some of the most exotic reptiles in the world. Then there's Hacienda Baru Wildlife Refuge about 10 minutes down the mountain & Manuel Antonio National Park is another must see destination in Costa Rica.

Treat the villa like it's your home. Try to keep thing's clean, especially in the kitchen area as food left out will attract ants as well as Raccoon's. and Even though the entire house is screened off all around, the bugs will make their way in and the raccoon's will make their way through the screen. Just keep any food in the fridge and you'll be fine. Please no smoking in the Villa and the morning you're ready to leave, please put used towels in the washer and then in dryer and put any used sheets in the washer with the detergent provided. Make sure all the lights are off as well as the power bar in kitchen and make sure there's no food left on the counters or kitchen table.

Decent place for a couple nights, however the road to the Villa was less than exceptional, easily doable when dry even with fwd however it's highly un-improved. When you get to the lot you expect to see the house but it appears to be empty. We found the (98) stairs directly across from the entrance to the lot, and were somewhat taken aback by the lack of view/sunlight given that it was basically built in a ditch. After every flush of the toilet the house would fill with an unapparent rancid smell. The villa was nice and clean.

Unless you are 100% comfortable with bugs (large cockroaches, moths, beetles, etc...typical bugs for the jungle) this is not a good housing option. There are multiple holes in the screen so bugs came and went freely. We were glad we were only here for 3 days. Once the sun goes down there is nothing you can do at the cabin because you have to leave the lights off to stave off bugs. The wifi doesn't work unless you have a laptop.

I alway's send a very detailed e-mail with lots of tips and tricks. One of the thing's in that e-mail states how to minimize the bugs coming into the house.. for example leaving the lights on outside in the evening so the bugs stay outside and when you're ready to go to sleep there are 2 bug lights (one in each bedroom) that will zap the remainder of the bugs so you are ready for a bug free nights sleep. I've stayed in the Villa for a month at a time and never had a problem with bugs. And yes the wifi only works with laptops or possibly a 2G network cell phone as that entire area only has a 2G network cell tower. Laptop's definitely work the best.

This place is a unique experience for the adventurous and fit traveler. We booked for a week and it was too long.-- this is a great place to stay for a few days. The stairs are quite steep and there a lot of them (96), I definitely recommend packing light or trying to bring in only a day pack. The entrance looks like a water run off. There is a large pole to the side. This was our first trip to Costa Rica and we started out with realizing that we had confused the state of Punterenas with the town of Punterenas. If this is your first trip as well, I would encourage you to ask your host for confirmation of the distance from the airport into which you are flying. Despite the long drive, we were delighted by the beauty of the area. (We stayed in Punterenas our last two nights and didn't like it nearly as much as the Playa Dominical area.) We loved Uvita, which is slightly further south, and took a surf lesson there. And we found the Bamboo Room near Uvita, to be delightful- live music and delicious food. And the restaurant at the top of the mountain, Rancho Los Compayres had such lovely service and stunning views. Courtney provided a lot of useful tips, like to stop in Quepos for food and to bring a headlamp. She was also very responsive, which was quite helpful in terms of figuring out our plans and such. If you go in the warmer season, I would recommend also purchasing a fan or two at the Maxi Pali in Quepos -- we found our first few nights to be incredibly hot and there was only one very small fan. I was pretty worried about bugs and while we were greeted by large spiders hanging on the screens, we followed Courtney's recommendations for how to store the food and didn't have any real issues with ants etc (YEAH!). I turned off the two of the outside lights the last evening we were there because I couldn't sleep well with them on and that was a mistake -- that night we got pretty eaten up. So maybe bring an eyemask but keep all the outside lights on. Also, the internet in the area is somewhat spotty. If you see the villa wifi as a possible access to work and home connections, be aware that it will go in and out and make a back up plan. It was awesome to have a washer and dryer. I am from Colorado so the level of moist was quite surprising. Being able to dry things was very helpful.

This place is a fantastic place but I guess it does depend on the traveller. I have had people stay there a month or two weeks and didn't want to leave because they loved it so much. I do suggest to people to generally stay at a few places along the coast or in the mountains so people get the full exposure of everything Costa Rica has to offer. There are several stairs down to the house, which I mention in my airbnb listing, so it may not be suitable for people with hip problems or trouble with stairs. You just need to take a few trips in bring all your stuff down which is kind of a nice thing about staying for a longer period as you don't feel like you're constantly taking things up and down the stairs. March and April are the hottest months and I plan to purchase a couple of fans for the 2nd bedroom as right now there is only one fan in the main bedroom upstairs. The rest of the year does get quite cool at night, that's why the blankets and comforters are provided. There shouldn't be a bug problem at all as I find if you leave the outside lights on only and no inside lights when it gets dark and then about 1/2 an hour before you go to bed turn on the two bug lights provided (one in each bedroom), there is no problem with bugs at night. I have a mosquito net provided but I have had many people tell me they didn't need to use it because the bug lights just zap the bugs before you go to bed and are very effective. It's not a good idea to leave the outside lights on all night as this will attract more bugs to the screened walls. Only keep them on until you're ready for bed and then turn on the bug lights and you'll be good to go fr the night, bug free:) As for the distance to the airport, it is approximately a 3 hour drive from the San Jose airport or if you fly into Quepos it's only a 40 minute drive. If you click on the map on my listing for the location, it clearly states it's in Savegre (Baru) in the gated community of Cascada Azul and if you zoom out on the map you can see where all the airports are including San Jose as well as where Quepos is and Liberia, if you zoom out far enough. Also, I had a sign at the entrance of the driveway for "Waterfall Villa" and an arrow pointing in the direction but it must have fallen down.. I'm having that taken care of as I type this. The internet is spotty but unfortunately that's the entire area. It's currently a 2G network and they are supposed to be upgrading the cell tower to a 4G but I have no idea when that will be. It's best to print off the email I send you with all the gate codes and wifi password as well as any instructions before you leave.. this way you have everything right there. I'm very detailed in my instructions and places in the area to buy food and restaurants like El Chicote 5 min. away right off the main road and as Aicila mentioned Rancho Los Compayres just up on top of the mountain past the Cascada Azul gate. I also give people my website which has tons of tourist attractions in the area and restaurants, as well as fantastic day trips of places slightly further away. Hopefully this clears up any of the problems Aicila may have encountered and those issues can quite easily be fixed. Also, if you are having problems with anything while you are staying at a specific place, just ask your host and we're more than happy to help in any way we can. I had no idea Aicila was having issues with the bugs and was leaving the lights on all night...if I had known I would've helped her out by explaining a before bed process which works fantastic. Anyway, next time just ask your host and you'll have a much more pleasant stay:) Sincerely, Courtney Gill Waterfall Villa & Jungle Retreat Host
