The Treehouse is a lovely bedroom in a beautiful 3-bdrm, 2-ba home in a wonderful neighborhood in the Berkeley hills. Guests are welcome to use the kitchen and the public areas of the house and garden.
Many people from all over the world have enjoyed staying at the North Berkeley Hills Homestay while visiting UC Berkeley (just 2 miles away), connecting with friends or family, looking for a place to live, taking classes, or seeking respite from chemically toxic environments. Many guests with multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) and environmental illness (EI) find a safe and healthy refuge here. We use only unscented products and provide fragrance-free soap, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, shaving cream, and after-shave for guests without their own.
There is free WiFi available throughout the house and guests are welcome to use the well-equipped kitchen for their light meal preparation.
The Treehouse is a lovely room that looks out on beautiful borrowed landscape and our glorious backyard. The very comfortable and supportive queen bed is handmade by the renowned San Francisco McRoskey family. If you have additional guests in your party, see our listings for the Asia Suite and the Library.
Though the neighborhood feels surprisingly peaceful in the lively Bay Area -- deer are frequently seen "pruning" local gardens! -- we're just a short walk from two AC Transit bus lines (#7 and #67, which offer a 10-min ride to UC, downtown Berkeley, and BART) and charming Kensington Village, where you'll find an old-fashioned drug store, post office, wine shop, restaurant, grocery store, ATM machine, and café.
Guests are also welcome to enjoy our back deck and yard. If you're lucky enough to be here when we're harvesting our organic garden, you can share in the bounty!
We've been hosting guests at this location since 2002, and look forward to helping you feel at home while you're in the Bay Area.

We communicate before arrival and I'm usually here personally to welcome guests at check-in. I'm happy to answer any questions that arise during your stay -- as long as I'm in cell range -- though pretty much everything is covered in the guest book you'll find in your room! I do my best to honor guests' preferences for interaction, which range from minimal to lively engagement.
For stays of fewer than 14 consecutive days, we are now required by the City of Berkeley to collect and remit 14% taxes. This is due in full on arrival, in cash or by credit card (sadly, plus an additional 3% charge). Guests may do laundry for $10/load; we provide 7th Generation Free & Clear or similar detergent.
The North Berkeley Hills Homestay is a peaceful refuge from the intensity of the outside world. Quiet hours are 10 pm to 7 am. Shoes come off at the door; you may bring your own slippers or borrow a pair we provide.
Since many of our sensitive guests cannot tolerate scented personal care products (even organic ones with essential oils), we provide scent-free bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, shaving cream, after-shave, and moisturizer. If you cannot leave your products at home, we'll store them off-premises for you while you're here.
Though we love cats, dogs, ferrets, rabbits, and other pets, we cannot accommodate yours.
We do not host smokers, anyone using illegal drugs, or those drinking alcohol beyond moderation.

I'm a strategist, organizational designer, and leadership mentor working in the health, global health, and social entrepreneurship sectors. I started the North Berkeley Hills Homestay in 2002 and have since enjoyed hosting guests from all over the world, including many with chemical sensitivities. I love meditation, swimming, hiking, singing, theater, organic gardening, cooking, and helping people make a difference that matters!
