Description

Newly Restored, Medieval Home below Castle Walls

Nestled in the shadows of a medieval , Venetian castle, this lovely gem is a wonderful spot to make your home for a few days (or longer if you're lucky !) and experience island life first hand. This recently,(2011) fully renovated , medieval house was the first to be built outside the castle walls centuries ago. It consists of a large (50m2) living/kitchen area with a loft bedroom of 25m2 and boasts the largest , domed ceiling on the island. It has a fully-equipped kitchen with all new appliances- big fridge, stove, and washing machine, and is decorated with taste, attention to detail and love. The owners are an artistic family, with a bent for colour, who have given a modern interpretation of traditional decor. Over the years they have collected numerous artifacts, restored furniture, and pictures, all which make the house feel like a cozy retreat.

With beautiful views of the Aegean from the patio or balcony, you can enjoy your morning coffee or tea , followed by a short 10 minute walk to the nearest beach and its crystal, blue water. In the afternoon, you might want to take a stroll through Chora, just footsteps away, with all its shops, restaurants, cafes. Or, alternatively, if you want to soak in the local culture and history, you may choose to visit the archeological museum, or go into the castle and see the churches from the 1800's, within which you can check out the Querini coat of arms and inscription dated from 1413, There are plenty of other parts of the island to explore, either by local transport, rental car or motorbike, or hiking if you are adventurous. The island has a long, rich history dating from ancient times and you can expect to feel enthralled by a sense of history lying before you., not to mention seeing some of the most beautiful beaches in the Aegean. Some of the most isolated beaches are also the most romantic, and can be accessed by small boats that you can take from a harbour nearby.. Or you can have a look at the small islands just off the coastline.. , Another area you are likely to visit is Livadi , known for its great beach, cafes, bars and night life. At the end of your day, you can look forward to returning to your cozy nest- with the house set in the rocks below the castle and its walls 1.5 meters thick , you can be assured that it is surprisingly , naturally cool during the hot summer months.

The owners, Savvas (architect), Poly (decor/gift shop owner) and daughter Phaedra (also architect) have put their passion and soul into their home . Anyone who is looking into a holiday on Astypalaia, is already looking for something special and there is no better place than this lovely home under the castle..

This house is one of those places that come out of dreams ... dreams of fairies and angels ... i guess it reflects the inner self of the owners that eventhough are not kids anymore their heart refuses to grow ... both are the sweetest and kindest hosts you can have ... Mr Savvas and Mrs Poly are artistic figures... Elegant , Pationate about everything and with tremendous knowledge . Their house has everything you need for the calmest vacations of your life wrapped up in a romantic net of unique decoration and beautiful touches . Once you enter in the dom you are falling even more in love in any aspect and of course with Astypalaia. Of course we didn't want to leave at the end but they were booked so we had to check out. I definitely recommend this house and I look forward to seeing Poly and Savvas in the future :-)

Great experience! The house was amazing, as in the pictures. It is located below the castle, in the traditional part of the Chora of Astypalaia, so it is very easy to walk around. Poly and Savvas were both very nice! They were also really kind and had some fresh eggs and a homemade dessert for us when we arrived :D We would definitely recommend staying there!

Amazing experience. The house is a hidden gem - a renovated part of the Castle, used as a cellar in the 16th century. Renovated beautifully by Savvas (owner and architect) and decorated meticulously and homely by Polly. Cool even when boiling hot outside, with all the amenities to host a whole family (we were two). The hosts made us rediscover Greek hospitality; fresh eggs and figs, educative tour in the castle, always there when needed. Excellent communication, amazing couple. Thank you Savva and Polly!

We had a wonderful stay in Chora in Poly's and Savvas house. The house is exactly as described. It is lovely decorated and we felt, from the begining like at home. The house, an old store, is like a cave. Whatever the outside temperature was, is was cool and we really appreciated going back home after a hot and sunny day. The house lies in a very quiet part of Chora. There is absolutely no noise, you can not ear any motor. A very few people use the street in front of the house. The kids were playing on the terrace in front of the house and looking for cats in the streets nearby. The narrow streets leading to the house are very nice and the kids had a lot of fun trying to be faster than the other. Chora is a wonderful and very nice place, from an architectural point of view as well as from a scenic one. The views from the city and of the city are gorgeous and, travelling through many greek islands, it is probably one of the most beautiful city/village (more cycladic type than dodecanese). Astypalaia is an authentic island. Beaches are nice, some of them really appealing, the arid landscape is fantastic (provided you like this type of places). People are very friendly, with a quiet pace and you really feel like you are in Greece (compared to other greek islands were you have the feeling to be in a german of italian place). We arrived with the 3.30 am ferry and Savvas was kind enough to wait for us at 4 am (and even more as the ferry was delayed). We really appreciated it! Both of us were very nice with us and were doing their best so that all of our expectations were met. We could discuss with them, and of course they rent their place, but they were also curious and interested to talk with us (sometimes you only see the owner for check-in and check-out). They guided us and told us what to do and where to go with our childrens, were to get this or eat that. Everything we needed we found in the house. There is also a washing machine (we did not notice from the description). In summary, if you are looking for a sterile white place with IKEA type furnitures, next to a crowded-but-amazing beach, pass your way... If you are looking for an authentic place to stay, with a personnality, where you could feel like at home, this is the place you want.
