Our farmhouse flat is in the heart of the Chianti countryside: sightseeing trips to Siena and Florence an easy drive, wine tasting excursions a stone's throw away, and walks and trails on your door step. All the best of Town and Country in one
Immersed in the Country. Very romantic - we fell in love with the house at first sight and so will you. It was like finding Sleeping Beauty dreaming in her clearing in the wood. Deer are a frequent sight, and wild boar often seen after sundown. In fact, it is important to drive slowly along our untarred roads, white gravel roads.
The apartment is in a refurbished old, stone, Chianti farmhouse. 4 large, high ceilinged rooms, and an equally large kitchen, the bathroom is modern and has a shower.
The rooms are all spacious, the ceilings are beamed and terracotta tiled, floors terracotta tiled, and from every window there is a view of our countryside with its cypresses, oaks, pines, olives, vines and fields full of wild flowers. There are two double bedrooms with a double bed and a single bed. There is a large sitting room with armchairs and two comfortable wrought iron sofas, which make up into equally comfortable beds. The dining room has a large open fireplace, a piano and a television, and leads onto the garden. The kitchen is large and is equipped with all that is necessary for full self catering and entertaining. There is a cooker, oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge/freezer, washing machine and a large range of plates, glasses and cooking utensils.
We have tried to keep our garden as natural as possible to blend into its surroundings. In the garden there is a table, chairs and umbrella for outside lunches and dinners (candles supplied by us). Rosemary, sage, thyme, mint, oregano and basil are growing in the garden too.
There are wood burning stoves in the sitting room and in the cappuccino bedroom. Our house is furnished in a style that compliments the architecture, though not slavishly so. The ceilings are all high, beamed and terracotta tiled, the floors are terra cotta tiled, the walls are massively thick - the house in summer is cool and in winter warm.
We are in the countryside and seem isolated and this is the beauty of our property because, in fact, one can walk in half an hour to Castellina in Chianti, drive in a very few minutes.
Castellina in Chianti is a busy little medieval town, with a good Saturday market. There is also a good supermarket, specialist grocery shops and wine shops. There are also some excellent shoe, bag, jewellery and clothes shops. And an excellent gift shop.
There are a number of fine restaurants, pizzerias and wine bars and one of the best ice cream parlours around, famous in the entire area. In the summer a number of events, such as concerts or plays, are organised in the main square in the shadow of the castle tower, where a stage is put up. During the day one can explore the Chianti or go on day excursions. Most places in the Province of Siena, even the coast further off, are an easy days sightseeing.
All around there are wine estates that offer free wine tasting and many have good restaurants. The Chianti is rightly famous for its natural beauty. The local governments jealously protect the area against any type of development or modernisation that infringes on its historic and natural beauty.
A car is fundamental as we are about 2 kms from the nearest bus stop, and 3 kms from Castellina. We are 22kms from the medieval walled town of Siena and 40kms from Florence.
There are 2 public swimming pools only a few kilometers away. Both are in the country, in beautiful surroundings. The smaller one is the Castellina in Chianti municipal pool which has a stupendous view; the bigger one is about a 10 kilometer drive, in Quercia Grossa, it is a magnificent affair, spectacularly laid out, with enormous pools and canals for pool walking. It has been built where formerly stood a water mill.
This may all sound too good to be true, but I assure you it is not. It is exactly as described and in exquisite surroundings. Peaceful and relaxing. No neighbours and no noise. We are an easy drive to all the major Tuscan towns and sights and many of our guests have preferred using our apartment as a romantic and cosy base to come home to rather than packing up bags every few days. What is better than chilling out, reading and planning excursions in your own cosy home away from home.
Accès des voyageurs
Our property is a few hectares of wood, river and garden. We have enclosed a private garden space for our guests in order that they can be ensured of complete privacy. However, this does not prevent our guests from enjoying walks and relaxing in the larger garden area.
Échanges avec les voyageurs
The apartment is part of the big old stone farmhouse where we live. However, it is completely self contained and has its own private garden. Unless we are specifically looked for or required our guests do not come across their hosts as our residences have their own separate spaces. On the other hand, our guests do have the advantage of knowing that in time of need there is someone close-by to give a helping hand.
Arrive after 3.00pm and no later than 7.00pm. Leave before 11.00 am on departure day.
We supply all linen and all utensils which must ALL to be left behind.
Guests must lock the apartment and close all the windows when going out.
No pets allowed.
Smoking is allowed though we would appreciate it if you smoked near an open door or window, or outside.
Our apartment is very nice, so everyone has told us, please treat it with care.

We like reading (a lot). Mostly about history, art, philosophy, economics, travel and good novels. We also like the cinema, especially films of the '30s, '40s and '50s. But any good film really and we love comedies. We also like photography, and taking photos. Franco is a pretty good photographer. We adore food, whether at home or in restaurants. We like cooking and eating out. We also like trying foreign dishes. We are very keen on travelling, to places off the beaten track but also cities of historic and cultural interest. Louella enjoys gardening and plants. And is a birdwatcher. We enjoy walking and being in natural, untouched, surroundings. We love the sea but it must be as deserted as possible and uncrowded.
We are a large family with 4 children, three boys and one girl. Unfortunately the kids are pretty grown up now, except for our youngest son who still travels around with us.
We have spent all our summers, Christmases, New Years and Easters in Tomino with the children, family friends and relatives, for many years now and can't imagine a more beautiful place in Europe.
We also love animals and have a lot of pets - cats, dogs and birds. The dogs and birds travel out with us on the ferry each time we go to Corsica. As we use the same ferry company time after time, they are quite used to seeing our ménage arrive.
