Apart from looking after guests at the mill I’m passionate about the environment, wildlife and bees and I love sharing my Incredible Edible story. Its a fantastic movement which began in Todmorden, West Yorkshire. Grow, produce food on urban waste land. Fantastic idea – I have always wanted to keep chickens and my first port of call was to Calderdale Council to seek permission to keep hens on a waste piece of land adjacent to Croft Mill. However, after a long laborious wait the local environmental health officer gave me the thumbs down, with her final comment being “site totally unsuitable for fowl”. Bees, what about Bees we thought. Much cleaner than hens, let’s get a bee hive, be Urban Bee Keepers (excuse the pun). With that in mind we set off four years ago on our bee adventure, little did we know that we would get involved in the plight of the honey bee, planting bee friendly plants and in turn supporting all native pollinators in our area. We are proud to support “Get Calderdale Buzzing” another local initiative. A little of this enthusiasm rubbed off on my youngest son who introduced his school to the importance of the New Pollinator Corridor running down through the U.K. and with the Calderdale Valley included in this corridor his school secured a grant from Bug Life to improve the school grounds with bee friendly plants and bug hotels.
We now have two bee hives, fruit bushes e.g. gooseberry, jostaberry, raspberry, blueberry, bilberry and a commercial blackberry; Mixed in with copious amounts of wild flowers and bee friendly plants all on this tiny piece of this once fly tipped land. In this abundance we now have numerous bird nesting boxes regularly occupied by blue tits, great tits, robins and this year even a wren. The site also copes with all the compositing material from Croft Mill apartments. It’s our very own nature reserve and what a resource. Last year our bees collected 80 jars honey, enough bees wax to make Christmas candles and some 30 jars of jostaberry jelly jam, a big favourite with people who stay at Croft Mill.
