Porto Germeno/Aigosthena is a cosmopolitan place because of its beauty and the many activities possible, and due to its short distance from Athens. Being in Porto Germeno / Aigosthena you need to choose between the crystal clear sea and the beautiful with many leisure activities mountain.
•Coming from Athens and a little further from the Psatha-Porto Germeno intersection, you find the site of “Thea” (it means “view”) with a literally breathtaking view to the valley and the sea.
•Sea: There are three unorganized beaches in Porto Germeno/Aigosthena with crystal clear water of green-blue color:
•the central beach with pebbles; there is a dozen of taverns and cafes here
•the right beach, Prosili, with the rocky coast and an interesting sea bottom, ideal for scuba diving. In the small port, you will always find a fisherman willing to take you on his boat to experience fishing at the Porto Germeno bay. The broader area of the bay is particularly rich in terms of fish, thanks to the great depth and morphology of the sea bed(URL HIDDEN)
•the left beach, St Nicolaos, with undersea freshwater fountains and a couple of fish-taverns.
•The 7km long coastal road constitutes an ideal route for walking or a bicycle ride as it follows the coastline and offers a view to the bay for the entirety of its length.
•sightseeing: the ancient city of Aigosthena with the “Castle of the Aigosthena” (the best maintained 3rd-4th century B.C. castle in the Balkans) whose walls are 5 m high and the towers reach 15 m, is located in a dense pine forest.
Apart from the ancient stones, there are medieval monastery cells, the church of St George (still open) and, in the north side of the fortification, the foundations of a five-aisled basilica church with a mosaic floor dated since 6th century A.D.
•mountain biking: Besides the main ridge, Mt Kitheronas is morphologically mild and ideal for mountain biking.
•paragliding on Mt Kitheronas: The last years Attiki’s aero clubs have selected this particular area as an ideal location for parapente/paragliding. As a result, it became one of the most visited locations for paragliding in Greece.
•trekking on Mt Kitheronas: One of the most beautiful trails starts from village Vilia. The trails are in a very good shape thanks to the mountaineering club of Eleusina. After a 1 km distance, there is the “Vryssi tis Tassias” (Tassia’s faucet), a place of leisure with a spring at the right side of the road, within a wonderful environment where you may also relax sitting on the benches purposely established here. From here, the view to the beach between the two mountains is breathtaking! At your first station, there is the refuge of the mountaineering club of Eleusina (5 km), altitude: 1100 m.
•road trip on Mt Kitheronas:
•Vilia is a small picturesque village, built amphitheatrically on the side of Mt Kitheronas. It’s 54 km from Athens and 12km from Porto Germeno/Aegosthena. There are many byzantine and postbyzantine churches in the village and the suburbs, such as the church of St Athanasios (12 century A.D.), the church of Pammegiston Taxiarhon (1637) in the village square and the one of Metamorfosis, designed by the famous architect Ernst Ziller. Villia is famous for the grilled meat taverns and the “karydopitta” (special walnut-cake with syrup) pastry shops.
•After a 1 km distance from Vilia (coming from Athens), there is the “Vryssi tis Tassias” (Tassia’s faucet), a place of leisure where there is a spring at the right side of the road, within a wonderful environment where you may also relax sitting on the benches purposely established here. The view from here of the beach between the two mountains is breathtaking!
•off road trip: A recommended red road starts from the beach of Psatha and leads to Vathichori (4,5 km) where a big photovoltaic park is created. A little higher (altitude: 550 m) you meet two ancient towers from which the mountain paths were guarded. After walking on the dirt road (the GPS is necessary), we meet the asphalt road that leads to Kriemadi and then to Porto Germeno/Aigosthena or to Vilia.
