NOW BOOKING FOR 2018.
Phoenix in the Dunes perches on a wooded dune 700 feet from a deeded private Lake Michigan beach shared by just ten houses. Built in 2006, this perfect vacation house combines the rustic charm of timberframe construction with all modern amenities. It's part of the historic Castle Park Association, and guests can enjoy all association facilities during the high season. A terrific spring, summer, or fall getaway!
Phoenix in the Dunes is a great place for large families to gather without being right on top of each other all the time. Gather at the big farm table for dinner (prepared in the adjoining gourmet kitchen, which has plenty of room for everyone to help!), then head to the living room for TV or video games, to the upstairs window seat with a book, or outside to lounge in a hammock or watch birds from the back deck that overlooks a wooded ravine. We have books, games, and puzzles galore, plus a highly playable Charles Walter console piano for sing-alongs or an impromptu concert.
Accès des voyageurs
Guests have access to our entire house and grounds, the deeded private beach shared by the ten houses on our hill, and the facilities and amenities of the Castle Park Association, including tennis courts, baseball diamond, horseshoe pit, playground, swimming pool, Castle library, and Barnswallow candy shop/youth hangout. (Library, Barnswallow, and pool during summer season only.)
A note about the beach: The house is on the second or third dune ridge away from the lake (depending on which direction you face and how you count them). The quickest path is about a five-minute walk to the beach if you are up for running down a rather steep dune to get there. If that is too much exertion, there is a gentler path that's about a ten-minute walk from the house. It's possible to drive down that way also (just a minute or two from the house) if you have very small children or people in your party with mobility issues. However, the road is rough and AWD is a good idea. The house is quite close to the Lake and you can see and hear it, but it is a woods house rather than a beach house.
Échanges avec les voyageurs
We're available by phone, e-mail, or text throughout your stay, and we urge you to contact us if there's anything we can do. We also have a local caretaker on call for emergency repairs.
All guests are required to sign and return our rental agreement before the booking is final. We are happy to send it to you to review before you commit to booking with us. We also welcome the opportunity to answer any questions you have, to make sure you will enjoy our house as much as we do. This is the main reason we don't do instant booking--we know that planning a vacation for a large group is not something that most people would be comfortable doing instantly anyway, and we'd rather have our guests be 100 percent sure that they're going to have a great time before they make any monetary commitments. If we get other parties interested in your time slot while you're still making up your mind, we will let you know before accepting another booking.
IMPORTANT: We use Airbnb's Strict cancellation policy because they require us to pick one and don't let us make up our own. Because large groups require a lot of coordination, it's difficult to re-rent a suddenly vacant summer week, but by the same token, we rarely have cancellations. Airbnb has advised us that we're free to refund our guests whatever amount we choose as long as Airbnb gets its fee, so if you rent from us and have to cancel, we will make our best effort to re-rent the time and if we do, we will refund your payment, less Airbnb's fees and any discounts we may have to offer to attract last-minute booking. But obviously, the sooner you let us know, the better.
- Only dogs are allowed; no cats or other pets.
-We welcome babies, but have no baby equipment on site. One of our twin beds has a rail that converts it to a bed suitable for toddlers.
-Our site is on top of a hill and surrounded by ravines on two sides and thick woods on three sides. If you have adventurous toddlers, you will want to monitor them closely whenever they are outside the house (and also inside, of course, but particularly outside).
- Parking lot limited to four cars.
-Our cleaning service reserves the right to charge extra for parties bringing dogs or creating unusual amounts of mess or laundry.
- Downstairs is threshold free and downstairs bathroom has a higher height toilet and walk-in shower convenient for people with limited mobility, though it does not meet full ADA specs for dimensions. However, there are stairs or a short gravel road between parking lot and house; check with us before booking if anyone in your party has mobility issues.
Our house is not a suitable site for weddings, and only Castle Park Association members may use the association's grounds and facilities for weddings and other events.
Our family has had a house on the site of Phoenix in the Dunes since 1960, and has ties to Castle Park dating back to the 1920s. Our original house, quaint but highly flammable, burned to the ground in 2003 due to carelessness by a power company work crew. The Phoenix that rose from the ashes, completed in 2006, is one of our favorite places in the world! Our busy lives in the Chicago area don't allow us to get there very often, and we we think the house is much happier when it's occupied, especially with people relaxing and enjoying all the fun things that Castle Park and the Holland area have to offer.
As travelers we use Airbnb whenever we can and haven't been disappointed yet!
