Step into history with a stay at La Limonia di Pogi. Painstakingly restored to its original 17th century look, the sun-drenched Limonaia offers a comfortable retreat with modern conveniences in the midst of a wine and olive oil producing estate.

Le logement

At the time of the Renaissance in Tuscany, wealthy noble families began to cultivate lemon trees after finding that lemons were essential in preventing scurvy, one of the major scourges of the era. They built special structures (in Italian: "limonáia") to protect their precious plants from the winter cold.

The Limonaia is part of the complex of buildings making up the historic mill of Pogi, which dates back to the 1400. The Mulino property is situated in a tranquil and secluded bend in the river Ambra. The Limonaia, situated 150 meters from the main villa, offers a very special type of antique Tuscan charm in a completely renovated structure. You will find absolute privacy from the world yet be only a short and pleasant drive from the fortified cities of Siena and Arezzo (30 minutes) or Florence (45 minutes).

The Limonaia, which traces its origins to the middle of the 1600's, offers marvelous views of the grounds and the Ambra River from its eight ample arched windows located on each side of the building. Home to numerous species of rare aquatic birds and ancient oak trees, the property is a paradise for bird watchers, sport fishermen, and nature enthusiasts.

Meticulously restored with the same materials used in the original construction, the Limonaia di Pogi offers historic atmosphere with modern comfort. Built on a terraced slope, the Limonaia has two levels: upstairs hosts a bright living/dining area with hard wood floors, fireplace, white sofas, and antique furniture. Also upstairs is the open galley kitchen with a Terracotta countertop and modern appliances. Outside directly in front of the kitchen area is a semi-covered space secluded by tall hedges that is ideal for candle lit dinners al fresco. The first floor, connected by an internal and two external stone staircases is the bedroom/bath area. The floors are of Pietra Serena. The Pompeiian red bathroom has vaulted ceiling and completely new facilities. The bedroom, which has a king-sized wrought iron canopy bed, has two enormous arched glass doors that provide much light during the day (and thick curtains to keep it dark while you sleep). From one of these doors there is access to another terrace, perfect for breakfasts time.
The property has a modern heating system that makes it comfortable throughout the colder months.
Both the access road and parking are reserved exclusively for this property.

The owners divide their time between Florence, the Mulino and South Florida.
They produce excellent Chianti and extravirgin olive oil on the property. They will be delighted to advise guests on the culinary and touristic highlights of the region.

It was our first time booking through Airbnb and we really lucked out. In addition to spending a few days in Florence, we wanted to enjoy the Tuscan countryside and explore the middle age cities and villages. On our search for a place that would accommodate our travel plans, we came across “La Limonaia”. The response and confirmation to our booking request came quickly and we were happy to be their guests. The Cottage: On the day of arrival our hosts Ale and Gene picked us up at the meeting point as arranged. The welcome was very warm and we felt very comfortable with them from the start. Then we went to the cottage. Although we had seen pictures online, we were speechless and delighted. The house is situated in a quaint and peaceful valley. It’s part of a large estate including its own vineyards, and Ale and Gene really took great pains to make the place beautiful and cozy. Everything is selected with great attention to detail. This historical building is flooded with natural light due to the large windows and has two wonderful terraces, stylish décor and modern comforts such as air conditioning and wireless internet. The place with its furnishings and facilities has everything we needed, so we immediately feel at home. The Location: "La Limonaia" is a great starting point for activities. Cities such as Siena, Arezzo and Florence are reachable in one hour by car. The same applies to the chianti-area or the region around Montepulciano. And the immediate area has also plenty to offer. The hosts: Ale and Gene are just great hosts: sympathetic, attentive and approachable. They live in the main house, an old mill, whose origins go back to the 14 century. Both are well versed in Tuscany and can give plenty of recommendations for excursions or restaurants. With heart and soul they take care of the maintenance of the property and they would also show you around. We really had a wonderful holiday in Tuscany. Ale and Gene have played a big part. We would like to say thank you and recommend "La Limonaia" whole-heartedly!
