We stayed at Ana's house for approximately 5 weeks from January to February as a family - two parents, a three-year-old, and a grandmother. It was a great, immersive, experience into Moroccan culture and I would definitely recommend it. The house was small and simple, but got key elements right - great location, beautiful rooftop terrace, great style and warm/welcoming staff. I worked from the riad nearly every day and the internet worked very well (I run a tech company, and did not have problems using GoToMeeting for calls, checking email, or cloud databases). The location was quiet and residential but very central, which made it easy to walk everywhere but not be overwhelmed by the medina madness. The staff were fantastic - warm, welcoming and attentive. Breakfast was consistently good and we had meals 4-5x week. The meals were great, Moroccan, and an excellent option with a family. They were huge, and we usually had leftovers. Toward the end, when we had tajine overload, they accommodated by trying other recipes. There were some considerations, which should not dissuade others but would be good to know before booking: Cats - there are cats everywhere in Marrakech, which is fine. But a lot of them seem to make the terrace their home - at some points they became a bit territorial. I have an extreme cat allergy and so it was difficult to really enjoy the terrace. The staff were accommodating, by placing blankets over the cushions, but it didn't solve the problem. I'm happy I brought Benadryl. Entry - the door does not open to the street. You must walk through a broken metal door into small room where there are two doors (it appears the riad was cut in half). One door is to this riad, another goes to another. The small room is lit by a motion sensor that only intermittently worked. We let the care-taker know, but it never fully worked. It was fine, the area is safe, but I can see walking into a dark room at night making some people (and me!) very uncomfortable as you cannot see what was inside before entering. Bring a flashlight, we were happy we did. Electricity - the power in the riad went out at least once a week and there were major surges. At one point, we were doing dishes and there was a surge, which made a lightbulb explode all over the kitchen. I've never seen that before (I've lived for years in developing countries) and it was startling. When I called the caretaker each time this happened, he was surprised. Bring a surge protector, we were happy we did for our computers. Privacy - the staff were wonderful. There is a caretaker/maintenance person (who was there ~1-2 hours/day) and a housekeeper who was there all day. Given the intimacy of the riad (it's not very large) there was always someone around. We have staff in our house in NYC, so we were ok with it, but...

I'm very sorry about the problem with cats, this is very common in Marrakech, (my daughter has cat allergy too!), in the other hand there are no rats around!! Yes, electricity is overloaded during winter or summer time due the air-conditioning, the Medina has not very well power line.

Ana is a good communicator. Prior to arrival, she organized an airport transfer for us, which, with 2 adults, 2 children and a toddler with a car seat, it might have been a little more complex than usual, but Ana's driver had the right size car and it went smoothly. Upon arrival, Ana's staff greeted us with delicious mint berber tea and showed us the rooms. The riad is very conveniently located in the Medina. Just a short walk to the Jamaa el Fnaa and Bahia Palace. The Riad has some steep concrete stairs which can be a little dangerous for a toddler but we were able to manage this with our child without it being too much of a problem. The breakfasts were good and the Housekeeper is a wonderful cook and she cooked us 3 Tagine dinners over the course of our stay, which is probably the easiest way for the whole family to eat affordably when staying in the Medina. The staff were also very helpful and efficient in helping us organize a driver to take us to various places around Marrakech.

I'm very, very sorry about the missunderstanding with the payment of the taxi. I don't know why Khalid was not there, where the taxi drops you off. You should tell me then. I will talk to him immediately. I review the air conditioning every year, actually the AC machine of the main room is new (only two months) Nevertheless I'll check it again. I will also talk to Maryam about the breakfast. Thank you very much for your kind comment.

I chose this riad over others because I wanted an everyday experience for my month in Morocco and not a foreigner's overdone, over-renovated interpretation. Privacy and kitchen/laundry access were also important to me. I highly recommend arranging and paying for a taxi on arrival, where kind-hearted Toufic will meet you and then Khalid will walk you to the riad and orient you with Marrakech. Because of this, I never got lost. I was met with rose petals, and then sweet Meryam served breakfast every morning -- she makes great msemen -- and one evening prepared chicken tajine, zalouk and salad for dinner. Everything was clean, Internet connection was fast and stable, there were space heaters to warm at night and a rooftop tent for days/nights to enjoy wine and music by candlelight or work and relax in the shade. An Ethernet cable was arranged so I could work from the terrace, where bees, butterflies and the scent of orange blossoms created a natural haven. Travel and activities can be arranged -- I only did this once and then did everything myself for Chefchaouen, Volubilis, Meknes, Fez, Tangier, cooking lesson; and my friend found her own camel ride and hammam. In addition to contributing items for next guests (clothes drying rack to avoid bird poo on clothesline, measuring cup, pizza/cookie sheet, sponge, gloves/apron, baking paper, resealable bags and non perishables such as rice, lentils, olive oil, flour, oats), I also donated the most current version of a Marrakech travel guide in English. Some English is spoken, but in general French and Arabic are needed to avoid miscommunication. There's a Carrefour with a 30-min walk or 5-min petit taxi ride, unless you have language skills and patience to negotiate with local vendors. Also be aware that "today" or "tomorrow" could mean 72 hours or next week. Most of all I miss call to prayer and the birds in the bougainvillea at sunrise and sunset. I recommend this riad and hope to visit again. Inshallah! :)

My wife and I just finished a one month stay at Riad Hayat and were very pleased. Ana was a good host and very responsive to my emails. Everything worked out flawlessly. The driver met us at the airport and Khalid was waiting for us at the riad. Our house keeper, Miriam, was very attentive and cooked fantastic breakfasts and dinners. We could not have been more pleased with the accommodations. Thank you, Ana.
