Ben and Kim are incredibly gracious hosts and really cool people. I love their place: it's cozy, private, comfortable, and the location is perfect for SE Portland, halfway between Hawthorne and Division.

My husband and I arrived at Ben and Kim's on an extremely hot day. Fortunately, Kim had turned on the air conditioner in readiness for us. What a relief! We didn't get a chance to meet Ben, but Kim was a wonderful host and made us feel very welcome. She gave us the lowdown on everything in the neighbourhood then let us have our own space for the rest of our stay. The bed was firmer than we are used to but it was still very comfortable. Their place is on a quiet street, so we had a very peaceful stay. It is only a five minute walk to Hawthorne St. where we found lots of interesting shops, good eating places and the unique & wonderful Bagdad Theater where they serve food & drinks during the movie. We would highly recommend Ben and Kim's place to anyone considering staying in the area.

We very much enjoyed our stay at Kim and Ben's place. We stayed for ten days beginning mid-June. The space is fantastic -- a funky and artistic garrett with plenty of skylights. Trees cover most of the roof, providing cooling and lovely ambiance. The apartment is quite spacious -- the photos don't capture the sense of space. My companion and I are both under 5'6" -- so your experience may differ, but for us the sloped interior ceiling was fine. I was working from the apartment on weekdays, and happily teleconferenced to colleagues back east from the deck on the south side, just outside the kitchen. Morning coffee and catching up with colleagues -- great start to the days. The wireless was very reliable, providing all the throughput needed for my remote work. Amenities: comfortable chairs, a/c from a heat pump (very quiet, and effective), nice dining table for two and the deck chairs. Perhaps best for me, the shower has a built-in step/seat -- it was ultra nice to was my feet by resting one foot on the step. Most of the skylights open, and have very good screens. One minor personal disappointment: the bed is currently a futon, appropriately low to the floor considering the sloping ceiling (remember, it's a garrett). It was a bit on the firm side for me -- but very functional, and the bedding is really nicely matched (yellow, orange, reds) to the blue tiles set around the bedroom window. There are many interesting books, a good conversation area, and there is a nice garden with many attractive ceramic pieces that provides seating and a table in the shade of the trees. Would definitely enjoy staying here again!

Ben and Kim's place was absolutely fantastic. It was our first visit to Portland and we could not have chosen a better place to stay. The location, just a couple blocks from the hearts of both Hawthorne and Division, was absolutely perfect with plenty of shopping, bars, and restaurants within a very short walk. A longer, but not overwhelming, walk brought us to many other areas, including breweries and other great restaurants. Being a couple blocks from any of the major roads (Division, Hawthorne, and Cesar Chavez) meant that the neighborhood was quiet. We had the windows open for much of our stay and found it to be an absolutely peaceful and relaxing visit. The apartment was clean and spacious with all the necessities. The queen bed was quite comfortable, though it should be mention that it is a futon and close to the floor. The kitchen area is small, but spacious enough for two people to be in it. The provided coffee was fantastic, and the fridge had some seltzer, OJ, and yogurt for us. The bathroom was clean and bright. While it only has a shower stall, it's a larger stall with a seat and plenty of room. The sitting areas were very comfy and cozy and provided plenty of space to spread out and plan our activities. The deck off the kitchen was a great place to enjoy our morning coffee. Ben and Kim were both very helpful with their recommendations and have a great knowledge of the neighborhood and greater Portland area. They left us alone for most of our stay, but checked in a couple times to make sure that everything was up to our standards. We would gladly stay with them again.

First of all, this apartment is a terrific location in the Hawthorne district that allowed us to walk and explore Hawthorne and Division St u and down. Ben and Kim were extremely friendly and hospitable during our stay. The rental is an upstairs unit that is clean and private, and quite comfortable. The new A/C unit kept the place cool even during a hot weekend. Would definitely return!

My wife and I went to Portland for a weekend getaway. We chose Ben and Kim to stay with because they are centrally located in the Hawthorne neighborhood, which at the time we did not know what that meant. What we now know is that the Hawthorne is located about a 15 minute bus ride from down town Portland. We spent most of our time (4 days, 3 nights) in the Hawthorne because there is so much cool stuff to do there. Plenty of restaurants, shopping, night life, etc. We only went into Downtown Portland one time for a day and my wife and I agreed that we were so glad that we did not stay in downtown. The Hawthorne is so much more inviting and comfortable. The house is basic and comfortable with everything that we needed to have a good time. Ben and Kim were available at all times and yet not intrusive. Once we were given the general tour we were left to ourselves and welcome to come and go at all times of the day and night. The house is upstairs from the hosts' house, but has its own entrance. It also has two nice patio areas. One balcony connected to the inside of the house, and another just outside of the door. I can't say enough good things about our stay. Perfect location, great hosts, great accommodations. Thank you, Ben and Kim!

When we aren't enjoying our home in Portland we love to go to our little house on the Oregon coast. Ben is an artist and loves spending time in the studio painting, drawing and drinking pilsners from one of our local breweries. Kim loves to read, which is handy since there's a wonderful Powell's Bookstore a few blocks from their house. She's teaches writing at the local university and also is working on her second novel. She loves to cook from the vast garden they planted in the parking strip at their house. Together Ben and Kim put up a freezer full of heirloom tomatoes and pints of homemade fig jam every year.
