FOOD AND WINE TOURISM
Our local specialties are a must: the famous casoncelli (fresh raviolis filled with meat or vegetables) whose recipe varies from village to village and is handed down from mother to daughter, lake fish (eels, perch, freshwater sardines and much more), duck, game, polenta, mushrooms, chestnuts, local olive oil and the spongada, a typical sweet focaccia.
From May to September many village festivals are dedicated to this local food and the women will turn into cooks for your pleasure only.
Here is a list of some of the main events: (URL HIDDEN)
And don’t forget we are in Franciacorta, where one of the best Italian spumante is produced!
HISTORY AND CULTURE
Vallecamonica is named after the prehistoric Camuni, first European people to leave trace of their culture on the complex and peculiar petroglyphs found all over the valley, and the area is listed as the first World Heritage Site in Italy.
Such peculiar and fascinating archeology is well illustrated during the guided tours within the educational park where prehistoric life is reconstructed and simulated: (URL HIDDEN)
Although the Roman period has also left important traces (see the beautiful amphitheatre of Cividate Camuno) is the Middle Ages that plays the lead role with its most unique and wonderful legacy. The upper town of Bergamo (Città Alta – 30 km) is the best-preserved medieval town in Europe, with its original walls enclosing a maze of stone paths and houses. Many other well-preserved villages in the valley can well represent the rural medieval architecture, also recalled in historical performances in some folk festival (see the website below).
Art lovers should not miss Romanino’s frescoes in the local churches. He is considered the precursor of Caravaggio and one of the most interesting artist of his era.
Some of the battles from the 1st WW were fought along these valleys and touching memories can be seen in local museums or in the trenches digged into the rocks.
