Description

The House of Blue Mangoes is a leisurely Franco-Tamil experience. The House's yellow walls and French beds blend seamlessly with its beautiful Tamil courtyard and 'thinnai'. There's plenty of open space to sit back, relax and to let time slow down. This listing is for room 'Kavya' which opens into the House's Tamil courtyard. The bathroom for Kavya is across the Tamil courtyard (about 20 feet from the room) and is exclusively for the guests staying in that room.

Nestled in a quiet lane in Pondicherry, The House of Blue Mangoes takes inspiration from David Davidar's book by the same name. Restored lovingly from ruins and rubble, the House is a seamless blend of classic Tamil architecture and pan-European sensibilities. The charming little 'thinnai' or sit-out at the entrance traditionally invites anyone passing by to relax and rest a while. A beautiful, open Tamil courtyard welcomes the first rays of the sun and offers the perfect spots to unwind, read a book, or simply do nothing at all. Chrome yellow walls and French beds are constant reminders of influences from across the seas. Every bit of furniture in the House is a carefully hand-picked piece of history. Our three rustic bedrooms - Kavya, Isaioli and Calanjali - are tastefully furnished with antique beds, cupboards and other things vintage. Of course, air-conditioning, geysers and comforts of a boutique hotel do exist, but they do not intrude. Still, nothing feels quite like home unless there's a friendly kitchen; so our fully-equipped cooking space lets you make your coffee and comfort foods just the way you like it at home. There are plenty of open spaces around the House, as you'll quickly discover; and if you wander across to the far end of the House, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what you chance upon - a garden spotted with tiny blue mango saplings. It is our hope that they grow up quickly to make the House of Blue Mangoes what we've always wanted it to be - a quiet place to perch under while the rest of the world goes on with its usual frenzy.

There's no dearth of open spaces. Feel free to use our 'thinnai', lounge around the Tamil courtyard, open-to-sky corridor, terrace, patio and garden. There is also a fully-functional kitchen equipped with a gas stove, refrigerator, microwave, coffee-maker, toaster, essential pots, pans and cutlery.

While we stay a stone's throw away from the House, we travel quite frequently. If we're in Pondicherry during your stay, we'll be sure to help you in anyway we can. In our absence, you can call us any time, and we will make arrangements to make your stay as comfortable and cozy as we possibly can.

Pondicherry's Sunday Market is a stone's throw away from the House. Good biriyani, south Indian vegetarian food and two pizzerias are all less than a kilometre away. Pothy's which houses Pondicherry's largest clothes store and supermarket is less than 0.5 kilometres away.

Although Pondicherry is not well connected through public transport, most of the town can be covered on foot or bicycle. If you intend to cover Auroville or areas outside the boulevard, we suggest hiring a motorbike. can help you hire bicycles or motorbikes. The House is in a tiny lane that can easily park bikes and cycles. Guests with cars may park on the adjacent road (St. Therese Street).

•The House of Blue Mangoes organizes a 2-hour South Indian cookery class-cum-lunch on request. Classes will typically include a fully traditional menu comprising a rice preparation, non-vegetarian gravy, poriyal (sauteed vegetable) and dessert. Classes can be booked 3 day in advance. Do message or call us for further details.
• The House of Blue Mangoes also organizes kolam classes on request. Classes can be booked 1 day in advance. Do message or call us for further details.
• Guests staying for a minimum of 5 days may request for a cook to prepare a simple lunch or dinner cooked in traditional South Indian style. Please let us know at least 4 days in advance of your stay. Do message or call us for further details.

Règlement intérieur
L'heure d'entrée dans les lieux est 14:00 - 17:00.

•Help us conserve electricity. Do switch off the geyser when not in use and turn off all lights, fan, AC and all common appliances before you step outdoors. Ask us for your free gift at the end of your stay if you've done just that.
•Re-using your towels just once helps save water and detergent. We, at the House of Blue Mangoes, are committed to doing our bit for the environment. Do hang up your towels each day until you want them changed. Housekeeping will only replace towels when you leave them in the laundry basket. Naturally, we're happy to change them daily if you insist. (Yes, of course, towels are changed when you check out!)
•For the same reason, bed linen is changed once a week during your stay and immediately after. If it gets really, really dirty, you may request us for a change of bed linen.
•If you are staying for more than 2 nights, do unpack your belongings into the cupboard and tuck away your suitcases / bags against the wall. This will help make housekeeping easy and keep your room clean.
•Because of the plentiful open spaces around, the House of Blue Mangoes occasionally plays host to uninvited guests like rodents and sparrows looking to nest. Do close your bedroom windows and lock your bedroom door(s) before stepping out.
•Smoking is restricted to the garden area. The law says so, and so might other guests who aren't so fond of chimneys.
•Since we do not have a full-time attendant at the House of Blue Mangoes, we trust that you will close the main door before you step outdoors so that both your and our belongings are safe and secure.
•We provide 1 bottle of packaged drinking water per person per day. If you need more, please let us know and we will arrange for extra bottles chargeable at actuals.
•Free Wi-Fi is available around the courtyard. The Wi-Fi name and password are displayed on the fridge. Since heavy downloads significantly slow down the facility, you are requested to limit your usage of Wi-Fi to surfing the internet, checking e-mails, etc.
•Our check-in time is 2 pm and check out is 12 pm
