LISTING NOW CLOSED - watch for our new double room listing coming soon!

Please ensure that you have read the profile in full before sending through an enquiry or booking request. It seems that our listings are best suited for independent travellers who are used to making their own travel arrangements. The listings are in a private home, and we both work full-time.

Greeted check-in is from 8pm, late check-in fine but we request an expected time of arrival. Generally if you arrive before 10pm we'll greet you otherwise you'll let yourself in.
Check-out by 7am, no exceptions.

Our small cosy living room on the ground floor will be yours alone when you stay. You'll have a comfortable couch to sleep on with
- pillows
- a duvet
- blankets

- TV (no satellite but all land channels)
- free wifi
- shared hard drive with movies and music to access

We offer you
- a tray with choice of tea / coffee / hot chocolate
- breakfast in the form of a cereal from a selection for you to serve yourself
- a small book swap set up too so you can find something to read and take on your journey if you like, and leave a book behind for other guests
(English books only)
- a small library of travel books for you to browse through
- magazines about UK and our local counties

The living room is
- on the ground floor
- next to the kitchen
- there is a light privacy curtain over the divide with the kitchen but no door
- there is a hall door that we close from the kitchen to the rest of the house so you'd have the kitchen and living room private with the hall door closed

House is old - it's not modern and new. In the winter (and this cooler summer) we have available
- a thick double duvet
- a hot water bottle
- a gas heater in the room
- an electric blanket for you
- extra blankets

If you are visiting in winter make sure you
- wrap up warm for bedtime
- bring thick bedsocks with you and a hat if you like your head warm

In winter we can also offer you
- an open coal or log fire ready for you on arrival in winter for an additional charge, must be requested at time of booking

The house is cleaned regularly as good hygiene standards dictate and as we like to live. But being old it has some damp stains and crackling paint on the walls. Being in the country dirt is tracked in easily through the doors so the rugs may have been hoovered but still have dirt stains set in them - they are put through the washing machine routinely but not every day. This is not a brand new building and has the issues that age and wear and tear bring, and there's not much more that we can do.

Every guest receives ** fresh clean linen ** which is washed after every single stay (even when only used for one night which hasn't always been practice at some places I have stayed over the years and found to be a disgusting habit of hosts).

So many requests for multiple people to stay over - we want to assist you so we can offer
1. the couch is really best for one person unless you want to squeeze together - it's not a pull-out sleeper couch but could fit two at a push if you're a small couple or very close friends - you can't take the pillows off it and make another bed on the floor as they are fixed to the couch (and other guests tried this without asking us first if it was possible, so here we are now making you aware of this). HOWEVER we do have a small light single fold-out bed which we can put out if requested for the smaller and shorter of the guests - though this will give you no floor space.

2. AND specially for the summer we have a 'glamping' tent set up which has three proper single wooden beds set up already, and one smaller shorter single fold-out beds which can be made up for smaller lighter guests. It can accommodate 3 people nicely and 4 at a squeeze - so if you want a bed and not the couch, or if you are two people you'll fit comfortably in there. Please check out our other listing and book through that:

Guests will have access to
- their room
- shared kitchen
- shared bathroom (upstairs)
- time in the garden
** Our own rooms are private **

Interaction is limited. Most of our guests are in transit so tired and just wanting to rest a while. Plus we work long hours and like to relax at home ourselves in the evening and may not be feeling sociable. So we'll welcome you and then leave you to settle in.

The area is rural in lovely countryside yet close to the airport and under the flight path. There are no village shops within walking distance. The airport has a train station with fast direct link into London, and a bus station with National Express links around the country.

Plenty of taxis available from the airport, main taxi company is 24x7Stansted and approximate charge to our location is GBP14, takes 10 minutes. We might be able to offer you a lift for a small charge, depending on timings. OR you might find a cheap car hire rate (for a 24hr booking) and drive to us instead, for half the price of a return taxi fare.

Location is on the bus route so you can explore the local area easily and get to the airport. The bus is 1 per hour, starts in the morning and ends in the evening. First to Stansted in the morning is 0650 for arrival just after 7am, last to us from Stansted at night is 2103. Doesn't operate on Sundays and public holidays. GBP2 cash to our stop from the airport. If you'd like to see the timetable before you stay please ask me to send you the weblink.

Parking is available for your car
Secure storage for bicycles

** very important to read this **

Our location is just 3miles from the airport so only about 10mins drive away if you have a late night arrival or early morning departure BUT
- We are under the flight path so you will definitely hear the planes until 11pm-ish (and midnight if flights have been delayed) with one or two cargo planes around 3am. The planes are loud and this is reflected in our lower rating for location which is so close to the airport but under the flight path. They don't bother us but we have got used to them - best you are aware of this and if you're a light sleeper you will struggle unless you get to sleep after 11pm. New set of sponge earplugs provided for each guest for you to use if you require them otherwise bring your own wax ones.
- We are next to a B road which is busy during the day and into the evenings but quiet at night after the last flights have landed.

There are no cooking facilities so guests must have dinner before they arrive. Lots of local options including
- at the airport a 24hr Marks&Spencer food shop and a cafe at the bus station
- at the large Services areas on the M11 at Bishop's Stortford
- smaller Services next to the airport with McDonalds and Starbucks
- local pubs and restaurants

Being a rural location mobile signal is intermittent. Wifi sometimes requires refreshing. Best way to contact us is by text or Airbnb app. We often can't take calls due to signal issues and also we work during the daytime and can't take private calls at work.

** check directions carefully before starting your journey to us **
- Bus costs GBP2 each way. No bus on Sunday or public holiday. No bus ar night. Please check the bus times versus your flight times.
- Taxi from Stansted airport costs GBP14 one way - use '24x7Stansted' taxi
- Car hire for 24hr can cost only GBP12 so you may want to do that instead of taxi if you are doing late night arrival and early morning departure

So to sum up -
This is not a 5* hotel and it is not a professional B&B. The house itself isn't very pretty and has a lot of wear and tear due to age and lack of care from previous occupants. If this bothers you then look elsewhere for a place to stay. We only recently moved in and are trying to slowly make it into a lovely home for us. The garden is pretty and so is the surrounding countryside.

This is a budget option prepared purely to assist you - travellers who are needing a super affordable place to stay near Stansted overnight and we are welcoming you into our home. We ourselves have spent many hours sleeping overnight at airports or struggled to find budget accommodation to overnight near major airports - as experienced travellers and finding ourselves now living near to Stansted it is the least we felt we could offer to others finding themselves in the same position.

If you're looking for a gorgeous B&B or modern new hotel then there are plenty of those options in the area including one fabulous one across the road from us and I can send you their website if you want.

I have tried to include as much information in the profile as possible but if you have any questions do ask me.

This is, very simply, a value budget option for overnight stays before or in-between flights. If you are watching your funds and aren't too fussed about staying on a couch it should be fine for you.

Checkout by 7am, no exceptions.

Please remember that you are being welcomed into our home - this is not a hotel or professional B&B. We politely request that you keep TV and personal noise (this includes phone/online calls) to a low volume after 10pm.

Smoking is allowed outside the house only. Dispose of butts in the bin and don't throw on the grass.

Price listed is for 1 person but 2 can fit at a push. Two people can fit on couch if a couple but it will be very close - it's not a pull-out sleeper sofa. There is a single fold bed we can lay on the floor and make into a nice bed if you want but there will be minimal floor space then.

The bathroom is shared - there is only one in the house. Bath products and towels are provided. Please do not help yourself to our personal bath items and bath towels. We request that you wipe down the bath or shower after use using the cleaning products available.

A breakfast cereal and tea/coffee tray is provided for each guest with your room payment. We also offer snack items in a snack box, with payment on an honesty basis. We don't provide dinner so make your plans to have dinner en route to us - we can send you local suggestions if you request them. Please do not help yourself to food from our fridge or cupboards.

Cooking is not allowed in our kitchen but you are welcome to use the microwave if you want to heat up a ready meal. We have had petty theft of cutlery already from previous guests so please do not help yourself to our crockery and cutlery, but welcome to request us to set aside the items for your use if you would like these available upon your late night arrival - 1x dinner plate, 1x knife, 1x fork. Please wash up after yourself.

The rooms you have access to during your stay are : your sleeping room, the kitchen, the shared bathroom, and of course the garden - please do not take it upon yourself to let yourself into the rooms with closed doors - these are private.

If you have time we would appreciate if you can strip the bed prior to your departure.

Alan and Leonie host together

Leonie has used AirBnb as a traveller since 2012. Now able to host from 2016. Has hosted and travelled extensively using CS site since 2012. You can see more on the CS website, profile LMBT with references. Travel from time to time with husband Alan who just wants to relax from a busy work schedule - he'll go out running or cycling or swimming. He joined as a host on AirBnb but as a 'silent partner' - please don't bother him too much in the house as he works long hours and likes to come home to chill out and enjoy his own personal space.

Hosting : We've been living near to Stansted airport since March 2016 and discovered that there aren't many budget options for travellers watching their funds - we've spent too many nights sleeping at airports (or trying to, watching the minutes tick by) or trying to find a good value place to nap for a few hours within a small budget (Amsterdam springs to mind, there are no budget options anywhere near the airport and certainly none at all accessible with a midnight landing and an 11am next flight departure so the only options are sleeping at the airport on a bench or the rather pricey 90euro pod yotel) - too many nights also spent sleeping at SeaTac or Hartfield-Jackson in ATL ... so here we are, near to STN and thinking of how we could assist travellers on a budget like us - we only have our couch to offer as we welcome you into our house, and in the summer our glamping tent (suggested to us by our very first couch guest John).
