If you want to experience staying in a property that is bursting with history then this is the place for you and your friends or family.
Rookwood Gate Lodge is an 18th Century building that my family bought in 1980 and modernised over the years.
If you are looking for a fancy accommodation with room service etc then unfortunately we can't help! If you are looking for an experience then we can.
Our 18th century gate lodge was, as the name suggests, where the gatekeepers of the famous Rookwood Estate lived. The main entrance of the estate is directly across the road from the lodge and the gatekeepers would open and close the gates for various visitors and nobles.
Purchased in 1980 by my parents Mary and Sylvie, they have put enormous work in to not only making it a comfortable and quaint cottage but they have also maintained the character and essence of this Gate Lodge.
It is the perfect place to explore the Midlands and West of Ireland and retire in the evening to a beautiful open fire and a glass a wine!
And don't be deceived by the outside image of the lodge. It is much more roomy in the inside than it appears.
Accès des voyageurs
It's all yours! When you rent this cottage you have it to yourselves. We live 100 yards down the road so we're always nearby if you need anything. And even if you don't need anything we love to chat with our visitors over a cuppa.
Échanges avec les voyageurs
When you arrive at the Gate Lodge you will receive a warm Irish welcome!
As our house is only a field away we are nearby to help you at any time. The local pubs are a mile away so we are always happy to drive you there and collect you at any time.
And Sylvie has a huge interest in history so if you would like to learn all about Rookwood House, the Estate and the Gate Lodge then he'll only be delighted to fill you in.
Rookwood Gate Lodge is situated over a mile from the quaint village of Athleague on the border of Galway and Roscommon.
It is only an 10 minute drive to Roscommon Town and less than an hours drive to the fabulous Galway City.
So what's there to do? Sightseeing, Walking, Cycling, Fishing, Golfing are all things you can easily do.
The Suck Valley Way is a tranquil walking experience that is 105km long and meanders along the river Suck. And the River Suck itself is known for its world class coarse fishing.
With regards sightseeing, the beauty of our location is that it is central and so is excellent for exploring the country. You could hit for Galway City and Connemara one day and head on a day trip to Dublin the next. Even places like the Cliffs of Moher are only about 1 and a half hours drive.
And if you're a golfer then you are simply spoilt! Roscommon Golf Course is only a 10 minute drive, Mountbellew is only 20 minutes and world class courses such as Co. Sligo, Galway, Strandhill, Galway Bay, Mullingar and many more are within an hours drive.
In return for our hospitality all we expect is that you respect our cottage. It is my mothers pride and joy!

Hi there! My name is Joe and my family own the beautiful, quirky and quaint cottage that I have listed.
We have been hosting guests since the mid 1980's and we love it. The fact that many of our guests come back time and time again says we are doing something right. And what's more, as a family we are lucky to have made some life long friends along the way.
So hopefully some day you will come to stay in our unique Gate Lodge and experience our good old fashioned Irish hospitality!
Personally, I love to travel also and have spent time living in San Francisco, Prague and Australia. My favorite destination to date is Cuba and my little 2 year old girl has already made me promise to take her there some day!
My other passions are Sport, especially Golf, and my work as a Digital Marketing Consultant. I know, its sad to list your work as a passion but I just freakin love everything digital marketing related!
