Whether you are looking for a whirlwind weekend of Chicago's greatest hits, or a leisurely week (see discount) of exploration, we are here to help make your visit pleasant and comfortable. The guest room is tranquil, our home is spacious, and our location is steps away from local gems, such as the Bloomingdale Trail and Rosa's Blues Lounge. We are have transit access to O'Hare, downtown, the beach, and other popular destinations. As longtime Chicagoans, we can share plenty of tips and trivia!
Our yellow brick 3-flat is a traditional Chicago apartment building dating to 1928. A few years ago we duplexed the first and second floor apartments. Our bedrooms and primary bathroom are upstairs which helps maintain a sense of privacy for our family and our guests. . .and eliminates competition for a shower.
The guest room is on the first floor, facing a residential street. It has a queen bed, night stands, a dresser with two empty drawers, closet space for luggage, and a basket of maps, menus, and magazines. There is a full bathroom down the hall, which is stocked with toiletries, as well as a half bathroom.
You are also welcome to spend time in the first floor common areas and back yard—see photos. We never want guests to feel constrained to their room. If we need to use a particular spot, we will let you know.

*We always have a pot of coffee going in the morning. Help yourself and there is also cream and almond milk. We also keep power bars in the guest room dresser.
*You may use the kitchen to prepare simple meals. Just let us know in case we need to coordinate.
*You may store some items in the fridge, but space is limited. (We cook a lot :)
*The upstairs, office, and basement are off-limits, except with permission.
*You may use the washing machine (in the basement) but it's best to do so when Gin is home because it can be a little temperamental.
*If you wish to have others over, please check with us first.

We are friendly and love having guests! We try to take our lead from you as to how social you wish to be and are also honest when we need privacy. Our home is big enough to accommodate multiple people doing their own thing.
We want you to enjoy your stay, so strive to be accurate in our descriptions.
*We have a big dog who is very enthusiastic when guests arrive. When he hears suitcase wheels rolling down the block, he nearly explodes with joy.
*We also have a 4th grader who might want to share all kinds of facts about the Titanic with you.
*We are about a mile from the blue line (train that serves downtown and O'Hare). Connecting buses are at our corner, and the walk through the neighborhood is pleasant. See more in getting around.
*The first floor is half a flight of stairs from ground level, so is not wheel-chair accessible.
*The guest bed is comfy, but a tad squeaky. We do have nice pillows though!
*This is a bustling, well loved home. Your room and main bathroom will be in great shape, the common areas will usually be clean and tidy, but we can't guarantee sparkling baseboards in every room.
*Our place can be on the cool side in winter. We have extra slippers and blankets and and can bump up the heat if you get cold. And there is an electric "fireplace" space heater in the living room. In summer, the guest room has a window AC unit. We use ceiling fans in the common areas.
*We are very involved in our community (you can see the solar panels from one of Michael's affordable housing buildings from our kitchen), and can be a resource for local lore, history, and current issues.

Our family consists of two adults (Gin and Michael), one almost ten year old boy (Miguel), and a friendly, loyal, black lab mix named Meatball. We also care for three friendly feral cats who patrol our yard and alley to keep away unwelcome critters. They stay outside, so don't worry if you have cat allergies.
When you enter our building, you might first notice our interest in bicycling and travel. Michael and I met through bicycle activism and we enjoy visiting new places. We both speak a little Spanish. He is more the world traveler, having visited over 25 countries. Miguel has also been on a fair number of trips. In fact, we lived in Ecuador for 5 months when he was three. Search for 8monthsafuera to read about our exploits.
You might also notice many flowers and other plants growing in the parkways on our end of the block. Gardening with a mix of ornamental and native plants is one of my passions. I try to grow enough lettuce and greens to get us through the summer, with varying degrees of success. I also enjoy running and writing. I blog about all of the above. Search dashtothestart.
We consider ourselves fortunate to have jobs that align with our values. My work is in bicycle advocacy, and Michael develops affordable housing. We can see one of his organization's award winning projects from our kitchen window. Michael's other interests include brewing beer, making music, local politics, and history.
Miguel is a gregarious 4th grader who shares a love of language with his English major parents. Watch out for puns and silly jokes. He is also learning to play piano, and is working his way through Harry Potter scores and West Side Story. One of his current interests is the Titanic. He has become quite the expert!
A few years ago, we combined our first and second floor apartments to make more room for visiting friends and relatives, and better accommodate our desire for an office with a door since I work from home (i.e. to get all the files and office supplies out of the sunroom!) We love sharing our extra space with travelers from around the world.
