Ferry ride from Portland is an idyllic 20 minute cruise. Cars not needed out here, and expensive to transport. There is an island taxi, and walking/biking are easy to get around. Peaks Island is an artistic community with old-fashioned entertainment like pancake breakfasts and intimate concerts in the summer.
It's much quieter in the fall and winter, so nature is the call then.
Information about getting to Peaks Island is through Casco Bay Lines (email hidden). The ferry schedule and costs are there. Also you can link to a map of places to park in Portland. There is a garage right at the ferry terminal, but it is often full and rather pricey. Other garages, or some of the open lots, are cheaper.
Bikes can be brought over but they cost as much as people to bring. There is a bike rental on the island, which has a loose selection of bikes to rent, I think about $20 a day. (Not sure what months they are open). I usually have one extra bike, sometimes two. If you are planning to go into Portland while you are here, buying a book of 5 round-trip tickets is probably cheaper than buying single tickets, even if you don't use the last one.
If you are taking a bus or train to Portland, the taxi from there to the ferry is about $10 plus tip. From the airport it is closer to $20.
In the summer there are 3 restaurants on the island, 3 bars, a grocery store an ice cream shop, and a few gift shops. A couple of art galleries, 3 small museums and lots of places to walk and wander. Some of these businesses close after Labor Day.
Leave lots of time to get tickets and park a car if you are coming that way, especially on weekends.
I hope that helps!

I am a musician and museum curator. I will orient you to the island, make you feel at home, then leave you alone, unless you want to shmooze. I love learning about people from different backgrounds, places, cultures. I'm a people person, but not too in your face. I go down to The Umbrella Cover Museum most days (I hope you'll stop in to see it!). My museum just got into The Guinness Book of World Records, so you could brag that you stayed with a Guinness World Record holder. How special is THAT!?
