I believe Catherine’s experience is due to being NEW to the Airbnb concept. This is a happy shared Airbnb house; if the gardener arrives mid-morning we all do our best to encourage the activity. Maybe we go on our way and start our day’s activity outside of the Airbnb house, enjoy a breakfast out or coffee or go about our intended visits or business day, etc.
99.9 % of Airbnb guests enjoy a safe, quiet, clean, comfortable inexpensive house to sleep / shower before heading out in the morning and also again when retiring after check-in.
The host needs time to maintain a clean house & yard and we go to work too.
Majority of guests are on their way out before mid-morning., and have activities to attend to.
I’m sorry Catherine could not find another enjoyable activity while the gardener was doing his yard work and that the blower was loud; but if Catherine would have taken liberty to visit one of the many local breakfast spots she asked me about, I wouldn’t be writing this. Sometimes we must make a change for ourself.
As a host I love to care for our guests. When I tried to consul with Catherine —she thought I should reimburse her for the time the gardener was using his blower at the house during mid-morning - ((it could not be worth too much - at the rate of $52 per nights stay)). She was not too happy for the remainder of her stay, despite 4 nights of peaceful rest, nice weather and the birds chirping. She decided to be upset with me vs being kind and forgiving.
I declined because I hoped she would take responsibility for her own happiness that morning.
Mostly I wanted her to realize that I already delivered to her a clean. quiet, safe, comfortable & reasonably priced — over night place to sleep and I was doing my best, and her expectations were more in line of 5 Star hotel.
When Catherine arrived, I was there to cheerfully greet her, help to carry her belonging into her room. I took time to show her the house, her private bath and the kitchen. We sat together and I answered her questions, particularly — she asked about good places to have breakfast.
I was happy to recommend local breakfast places. She told me she like to visit “Gardens” when she traveled - I recommended local public gardens. I was sure she would go out enjoy herself since she said she had morning time to explore in nice weather and would be meeting her Aunt in the afternoons.
Prior to the yard work: I explained that because of recent cold and rainy spring weather - the opportunity of a few good days arrived to clean the yard & gutters - all in very desperate need. I was hoping to catch my next door neighbor’s gardener to help with a spring cleanup.
Anyway the gardener said he would do his best - he kindly arrived on one of the weekday mornings after 10:00 am (vs his usually 7:30 start) and made the yard and gutters neat, perfect.
Catherine said it was her right to have it quiet during her stay at the Airbnb. And that I should reimburse her for the few hours that the yard was being cleaned. I asked her why she could not have gone out to enjoy a nice breakfast vs listening to the gardeners blower. And then kindly advised her to call Airbnb.
