Private entry, ocean-view balcony, kitchenette. Access to stone courtyard, double kayak and BBQ included. Thanksgiving to May Day weekends, enjoy wood fires in the waterfront stone fireplace. Home is inspired by European castles, English Cotswolds and Mediterranean colour. "What could just one man build with his own two hands?" Greg wondered. Over a decade, he cut and set each stone. Shaped arching windows and doors from trees felled from the land. Forged and hammered iron. One man's masterwork.

Le logement

This is one of two upper room suites at Morningstone (see also listing for "Village Bay View @Morningstone" and a third oceanfront suite coming online summer 2017). The room has an ocean-view tumbled stone shower, queen-sized bed with goose-down duvet and down pillows, comfy reading chairs, and a dining table and chairs. On the ocean-view balcony, a patio table with chairs. Kitchenette well-equipped with fridge, toaster, microwave, kettle and French press coffee maker. This room is provisioned with fruit, granola & milk, homemade bread, butter & jam, coffee, tea and cream, all replenished upon request.

Overhead fan keeps room cool and breezy in warmer weather. The heated stone floors keep the room snug and warm in cooler weather. Cloth-covered foam mats are available for children or additional guests. We will wash and dry a load of laundry ($10).

Saturdays (10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m), between May Day weekend and Thanksgiving, we make crepes at the local Farmers' Market. Most other mornings, private arrangements may be made for a breakfast crepe right at Morningstone, made personally for you by Greg ($8-12 each).

Accès des voyageurs

Communal, shared spaces include the outdoor gardens (continually under development!) and seating areas. There is a propane barbeque with utensils, tables & chairs under the kiwi and grapevine trellis, and other grassy areas for spreading out a picnic blanket (provided).

Échanges avec les voyageurs

We are happy to pick you up in Greg's hard-working van. (Not elegant, but plenty of space for you and your luggage). Your room has a private entry, so once you have keys in hand and are oriented to the property, you can be as much of an introvert as you would like! That said, we are close at hand, available by text, should you need anything. Greg always has a new stone project on the go and you are welcome to hang around and watch (and be as much of an extrovert as you like!) This summer's projects include a stone patio-deck, fountain and an outdoor pizza oven.

Saturday mornings at the Farmers' Market between May Day weekend and Thanksgiving. Many other mornings, Greg will be available to make crepes right at Morningstone, just ask for menu options.

Or to the bakery for breakfast! The Sunny Mayne Bakery Café in Miners' Bay (where the locals hang out) opens at 6:00 a.m. and serves tasty food, whether you would like a pastry and coffee or a full hungry-person meal.

1. Reserving your vehicle . . . on BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Mayne is strongly recommended year 'round and can be done online. Walk-on passenger reservations (available by phone only) is also recommended, especially during the summer months.
2. On bookings: We cannot accommodate Saturday arrivals or departures between May long weekend and Canadian Thanksgiving in October, even thought AirBnb site will "allow" you to book. Three night minimum booking on Canadian long weekends and during Christmas school holidays.
3. Morningstone is a peaceful working community of family and registered guests (only) who are often engaged in creative work. Therefore, please keep amplified sound indoors and at minimal levels. Also, Mayne Island is a Transport Canada "No Drone" zone because of the seaplane terminal and heliport.
4. The room and property are smoke-free (and no vaping!) and please avoid perfumes and other strongly scented products in the room.

We loved our stay at Dorothy and Greg's place. It was clean and comfortable and situated in the best location. We loved Dorothy's homemade bread and Greg's crepes We loved having the kayak available and Greg was very knowledgeable about hiking on the island. It was very peaceful and beautiful. We highly recommend.

I planned a surprise visit for my dad to Mayne Island and I saw Dorothy's place was a rare find, and available. I fell sick the night before I arrived, however, Dorothy and Greg were excellent hosts, and made me feel comfortable nevertheless. I went there with no expectations or preparations, and I was taken aback by how serene, tranquil and comfortable Dorothy & Greg's place was. It is conveniently located close to the ferry terminal, and a short drive away from the seaplane dock (which was my preferred mode of travel). The Japanese Gardens are a short stroll away. Dorothy makes some really delicious homemade jam that pairs so well with her fresh baked bread. You might also want to try her frittatas for breakfast. I went kayaking with my dad in their 2-person kayak, and that was a memorable experience for my father and I. The views around there are amazing, and you're probably going to see some seals if you're kayaking. I highly recommend staying with them!

Dorothy and Greg were gracious hosts. We were greeted as we came down the drive with an enthusiastic Greg and in the room greeted again by some freshly baked breads and home made jams! The view from the room is incredible, and the property is immaculate and exactly what is needed for a weekend of recharging. Mayne Island is a wonderful, well kept community!

I'm glad you thought that the property was immaculate! Greg is always working on some project or another; the courtyard and pizza oven still being under construction means that there's a pile of stones here and a power tool there . . . We loved having you!

A beautiful well cared for home with views of the water, ferry and gorgeous sunsets. Quiet neighborhood - even wildlife in the yard (deer). The suite was spacious, clean and had all the comforts of home including a small balcony area. Homemade granola, jams, breads and milk/cream and bottled water in the mini fridge for breakfast. A private mini kitchen in the room with tea, coffee, plates, glasses, mugs, coffee maker, kettle etc. Useful information on key spots on the island to see/eat at was also provided. Dorothy was a welcoming, accommodating and helpful host. She went out of her way to make our stay relaxing - including flexible check in /out times and help sorting out the ferries after they were cancelled last minute on us on both arrival and departure. If you have the chance, try their homemade crepes - delicious! It's obvious this home is well loved and holds many memories of the owners travels. This place is a step above a basic B&B! I would highly recommend staying here. I hope to return again soon.

Thank you, Leanne. The BC Ferries muddle was unlike anything we have seen before. But so glad you had a good time, even with the unexpected journeying via Vancouver Island!

This home is beautiful and peaceful. The stone work on the home and courtyard is amazing. Even the stone tile floors in the suite are smooth and feel great on your feet. The location is ideal. The property is full of flowers and herbs. The kayak was so nice to have right there at our fingertips. The room had beautiful homemade bread and butter and jam for the morning. Fantastic! I would recommend this place to anyone. The hosts are lovely!

Thank you! I keep "forgetting to remember" to let guests know to help themselves to herbs for salads and the BBQ! That rosemary bush and the oregano just love this climate. So glad you found your stay peaceful.

Dorothy and Greg are amazing hosts. They shared many great recommendations for activities and sights to see on the island plus they make the best crepes. We had a fantastic time and highly recommend their place. The room was spacious with a beautiful view of the water. This was the best airbnb experience we have ever had.

Greg and I have been married for 38 years. When our four children were young, we traveled for a year in a tiny-home-on-wheels, throughout Mexico, Guatemala, Europe, North Africa and Turkey, home-schooling along the way. Morningstone is a reflection of the many places that we have loved and called home for a season. We now are grandparents to five! While my husband Greg builds and works on multiple projects outdoors, I write. Two books are being launched this summer. The first is a memoir and the second a children's book co-authored with my granddaughter, featuring a picture of Morningstone in the artwork. I occasionally teach university courses, most recently lecturing on the Dead Sea Scrolls at the University of Oxford and in London. One of our favourite activities as a couple is making and serving crepes to Mayne Island locals and guests on Saturdays at the local Farmers' Market.
