À propos de ce logement

This cozy cabin provides a perfect getaway and is a gem in all seasons, especially during the fall colors or a blowing winter storm.

Timber frame cabin built on a hilltop, on 20 acres of old growth maples. Walls of glass, a screened in porch and a wrap around deck bring the outdoors inside. The ridge top location has spectacular views through the trees - with lake views after the leaves drop.

The property also boasts a fantastic new cedar sauna and a high fence for pets to run free.

Le logement

The timber frame cabin is located in Hovland MN, which is 30 minutes north of Grand Marais, near the Canadian border and lake Superior. The timber frame cabin was built only a few years ago.

The property also boasts a fantastic new cedar sauna, a firewood shed and a 90' X 90' x 8' foot high fence for pets to run free.

The cabin sleeps up to 3 in beds (1 double bed & 1 sleeping cot) and many more on floor and/or outside in the screened in porch. We accept up to 6 guests at a time. Camping is also an option with the wide space. Please email for details.

Folks will need to bring:
- Sleeping bags/blankets/pillows for beds
- Drinking water. There is rain barrel water for washing, but not for drinking. In winter, snow can be melted on the wood stove or gas burner for washing.
- Cooler for perishables during summer months
- Headlamps/flashlight to get to the outhouse or sauna

Cabin is equipped with:
- outhouse
- wood shed & axes (be prepared to get your own kindling)
- wood sauna
- wood stove
- gas lights
- gas cook top
- outdoor cook grill (bring your own charcoal, or use the maple wood that is provided)
- dishes, cutlery, pots, pans

There is a fire pit outside, so don't forget marshmallows!

Cleaning Fee:
We do not charge a cleaning fee, so long as the cabin is left in the same condition (cleaned) as it was upon arrival. If the cabin is left uncleaned, a $50 damage deposit will be charged. Remember to pack out your garbage.

Accès des voyageurs

As guests, you'll have private access to the entire cabin for the duration of your stay.

Autres remarques

Summer access:
The road to the cabin is a paved road with the last mile as gravel. There is an unmaintained gravel hill just before the cabin which is rough and can be particularly tricky after heavy rainfall. If you are not driving an SUV you may choose to park where Tom Lake road Y's off and walk up to the cabin. It is an uphill walk for about 200 yards (15min) to the driveway on your left.

Keep an eye out for the orange and blue "Mokki" signs at key intersections (off Arrowhead, at the Y at Tom road, at the driveway).

Winter access:
Access to the cabin once there is snow on the ground is via snowshoeing or walking. Consider the use of a plastic kids sled to help carry in your supplies.

When there is snow, the road stops being plowed part way up. When this is the case, there is a plowed parking area approx 200 yards after you turn onto Tower Rd. It is an open area, on the right hand side (north side) of the maintained road. From here, the walk up is approximately 1.2 miles or 30-45min, mostly uphill. The road is plowed for a bit longer past the parking, but parking should be in this open area.

Network Service: There is no cell phone reception at the cabin. You can walk approx 10min further up the road to receive some service.

Dogs: We do allow dogs at the Mokki cabin, but we do not allow them inside the cabin at any time. There is a large fenced in area (with fence running underground to prevent digging) in the woods made specifically for dogs. It is located part way along the driveway on your right hand side as you arrive, there is a Mokki sign indicating its location.

Sauna Liability: Please note that guests use sauna at their own risk.

Outstanding, peacefully secluded location. Design of the cabin with the large windows, brought the north woods in. Sauna was a sweating delight. An off the grid treasure not to missed.

Lonnie's place is fantastic. It is secluded, private, quiet, and scenic. It is close to Grand Marais, the Canadian border, and plenty of state parks with hikes of all skill levels to choose from. It was even cooler to learn about Lonnie's story after reading through his book! Would love to return to Mokki.

We stayed here for only two nights, but it provided us with much needed down time. The cabin is very clean and has all the necessities- no more, no less. It's located in a great area, it allowed us to explore multiple state parks and relax by Lake Superior. The only downside was walking up the driveway with all of our stuff, but we saw a very cute fawn on our way to the car once. We will most likely return sometime!

Peace and solitude, in a beautiful setting. The sauna is amazing. Next time we will bring more provisions so we don't have to leave to get food during our stay! The hike from the bottom of the driveway isn't bad at all on foot, but non-SUVs will definitely want to park at that last "Y" in the road.

This is such a great spot for a trip! We loved the sauna, the accessibility to fun hikes, and the seclusion of the cabin.
