Sliema is a coastal town situated on the northeast of Malta, adjacent to St. Julians. Once the home of Malta's aristocracy; it has now become a major commercial area, very popular for shopping, bars, cafes, restaurants and hotels.
Sliema acquired its name from a chapel dedicated to The Our Lady of The Sea (or Stella Maris) built in 1855, which served as a reference point to the fishermen who inhabited the area. The name is linked to the opening words of the Hail Mary prayer, which in Maltese are "Sliem Għalik Marija". Sliem is the Maltese word meaning peace or serenity. Sliema is quite a large residential town with a population of around 15,000 locals; housing also a significant number of expatriates that reside there temporarily.
Sliema was once a quiet fishing village, a minor summer resort that hosted the wealthier Valletta residents. The 19th century, however, saw the development of Sliema; it quickly grew into a residential area, adjoining to neighbouring St. Julians. Elegant villas and town houses, as well as many Victorian buildings were built by the British along the promenade overlooking the rocky coastline.
Soon, the people of Sliema understood the tourism potential of the area, and so they began a building boom that changed the whole landscape. Sliema became the first tourist resort in Malta, and its importance still remains. Nowadays, only a few Victorian and art nouveau houses remain, the rest have been replaced by modern apartment blocks, establishments and hotels.
From one side, the Sliema promontory offers spectacular views across to Valletta, and from the other side, there are breathtaking open sea views. The promenade that stretches for a couple of kilometres is ideal for long walks or runs, while the various benches provide a place for the locals to relax and socialize during warm summer evenings. Sliema coastline also boasts the Independence Garden completed with a children’s playground, as well as two fortifications: a De Redin tower built in the 17th century to protect the islands against sea attacks; and another tower that was built by the British in a neo-gothic style in the 1880s.
It is quite impossible to list down all the details about every tourist spot and every activity to do in Malta. Malta may be a smaller country of Europe, but it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world. From the language, to archaeological and historical paces, there are lots of places to visit which are thousands of years old. Malta is a stunning place of natural beauty and also one of the most agreeable climates in the Mediterranean. The climate in Malta is hot and dry in summer, with adequate rainfall, warm autumns, and cool winters (without frost or snow).
For those who want to get away from the busy life in the city to get lazy on the warm sand all day long without doing anything but relaxing, Malta is one recommended tourist attraction. You can laze in the sun on the sandy beaches in the morning and go out at night at a bar or disco until the wee hours in morning. You can go visit historical places and learn about the culture of the Maltese people. This one little island may be small in size, but it’s full of many artistic treasures!
One of the must-see tourist destinations in Malta is Valleta, described as “one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world” by UNESCO’s World Heritage website. The city of Valetta is the capital of Malta and it is surrounded by a high fortress which was built in the 16th century. In Valetta, some of the architecture and places that one should never miss are the St. John’s Co-Cathedral, National Museum of Archaeology, Grand Master’s Palace, Manuel Theatre, and the Grand Harbour.
Gozo island is a smaller island located to the north side of Malta. It is only a 30-minute ferry ride from North Malta. In Gozo, tourists relax at the Bridge Xwiendi and take in the beautiful cafes and beach scenes. The marine life in Gozo is really amazing and the most popular destinations on the island include Citadella, ta’ Pinu Sanctuary, Azure Window, and the Ggantija temples. The main attraction in Malta and Gozo is the Blue Lagoon.
Mdina is referred to as the medieval jewel of Malta. The name Mdina itself means that it is a walled city. The city has an Arab feeling with an atmosphere of Tiboli, but just smaller in size. The population in Mdine is only around 300 people.
Malta is also one diver’s paradise together with Gozo especially since the climate allows for it all year long. The clear blue sea and underwater attractions make it one of the greatest places for diving. The ocean offers wrecks, abundant marine life, cave formations, and underwater cliffs. One of the most famous caves in Malta is the Blue Grotto, which is a tremendously popular tourist destination for those who visit the island of Malta.
