The main guest room also includes a full-size couch for relaxing and a bookcase stocked with various guidebooks about Seattle and the surrounding area. If needed, the couch can transform into a comfortable bed for smaller people (though we have beds for up to 6 people). The media room includes a comfortable, high-end convertible sofa bed (not a futon, rather two moving mattress cushions that convert to a queen-sized mattress), several other chairs, 40-inch HDTV with HDMI cable that you can hook up to your laptop, a DVD player, and Apple TV with Netflix.

What you'll enjoy by staying here:
+ a large (17.5 x 10.5 feet), quiet, very private guest bedroom in our daylight basement.
+ exclusive access to a full bathroom on the same level as the guest bedroom. bathroom includes hair dryer, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion and towels for your convenience.
+ a very comfortable queen bed with pillow top mattress and quality down comforter.
+ a high-end, queen-size convertible bed (also very comfortable) in the media room for the privacy of additional guests in your party. (Note: this room is not strictly pet-free, but our dogs don't hang out here often...and definitely won't be there while guests are renting the unit, either)
+ a queen sized airbed for larger parties (there is space in the media room to set up this airbed where it will not be in the way of media room recreation such as playing games and/or watching TV)
+ a full-size comfortable couch with down and foam cushions (with cushions removed, the couch makes a comfy bed for anyone 5'9" or shorter, or taller side sleepers, and can serve as a bed for a seventh guest, if needed).
+ reliable, high speed WiFi.
+ a large selection of magazines and books - both focused on Seattle travel and fiction/non-fiction - for your reading enjoyment.
+ plenty of accessible, free parking (both on street and in the driveway, if needed).
+ a chest of drawers and hanging rod in case you'd like to unpack your bags.
+ a small kitchenette area featuring a small refrigerator, microwave, electric kettle, induction cook top, and dishes that you may use if you want to easily prepare light snacks (complimentary coffee/tea and oatmeal are also provided). However, this is not a full kitchen, so there is no oven nor kitchen sink. (We ask that guests leave their dirty dishes in plastic tubs that we provide, so that we can get the dishes and wash them for you while they are out). If you would like to cook on our gas grill, please contact us to make arrangements.
+ Note - the basement suite is not suited for very tall people since the ceiling height is 6' 3" and there is one area where a beam drops a few inches lower.

Our house is occupied by a married couple and three dogs; however, the guest bedroom has always been animal-free and the dogs are kept primarily on the main level away from guest amenities. Note: the media room is not kept strictly dog-free, since we sometimes use that room with our dogs when we don't have guests. However, we rarely use the room, and the dogs don't go down there when we're not there :)

The basement level has a separate access and includes all of the necessities needed for a comfortable stay; however, guests are welcome to share any of the following features of our home with us:

+ Large, private, fenced back yard with outdoor dining and two-person hammock in case you would like to relax outside.

+ Laundry facilities are also available to guests staying 4 or more days.

Interaction with Guests
Tom is a Seattle-area native, and Corinne has lived in Seattle for 21 years, so if you are looking for recommendations, we're happy to provide local tips and advice. We have lived in the Ballard neighborhood for 9 years and have compiled a list of our favorite local restaurants, music venues, outdoor activities - most of which are located within a mile of our home.

We both have traveled quite a bit and are also big fans of being AirBnB guests ourselves because we enjoy having the opportunity to chat with other travelers. However, if guests are too busy having fun to chat, or would prefer more privacy, our guest facilities will be a great choice since the guest bedroom, bathroom and kitchenette are on a separate floor from our main living space; furthermore, the stairs between the two floors are separated by a door, so if you're not a fan of dogs, you don't have to worry about one of our dogs intruding in your space. Guests also have a separate entry to enter the guest quarters from our back yard.

Much like New York City, Seattle is a city of neighborhoods, each with its own distinct personality. We live in Ballard, which has been called "the most soulful" neighborhood in Seattle. We think of it as the 21st arrondissement of Paris: the Farmers Market, the boutiques, the little coffee bars and boîtes. Our house is located one mile north of historic Ballard, close enough for a leisurely walk through this quaint, friendly neighborhood, and yet, far enough away to park easily and sleep undisturbed from others coming and going from all of the wonderful restaurants and bars this neighborhood has to offer!

More info about Ballard:
+ a 5-minute drive from Golden Gardens beach (with amazing sunset views of Elliot Bay and the Olympic Mountains)
+ a 20-minute drive from downtown (or, a 30-minute bus ride if you'd prefer to avoid the expense of parking)
+ a charming neighborhood, home to dozens of quaint boutiques, coffee shops, restaurants featuring many different types of cuisines (French, Mediterranean, Greek, German, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Japanese/Sushi, Chinese, Italian, English pub food, and many seafood options), parks, a theatre, salons/spa, grocery stores, a wonderful Sunday Farmers' Market and countless conveniences (be sure to check our Guidebook link at the upper right for some of our favorite recommendations).

Old Ballard, the historic neighborhood is nearby our house, only a 15-20 walk, or a 5-minute drive away, so the vibrant night-life is nearby even though our house is located in a quiet neighborhood.

Public Transport:
+ Our house is located 3 blocks away from the bus to downtown Seattle in 20-30 minutes (on the #15, or RapidRide D lines) - schedules can be found here on the Metro King County site. Bus rides to downtown will cost either $2.25 or $2.50 depending on whether you're riding at peak times. You can pay with cash (exact change since buses don't provide change back), or you can purchase an ORCA card that you can load with funds electronically.
+ From the airport, SeaTac, you can take the Link Light Rail for about $2.75 and 40-minute ride to Westlake Center in downtown Seattle. We recommend a cab from there, as it will only be about $10 and a bit easier than the city bus if you have luggage. If you choose to take a cab or Uber car directly from the airport, then you should expect to pay around $65. Once you book, we supply you with all the details for a smooth arrival!

Guests who are staying 4 nights or more are invited to use our laundry facilities free of charge; however, we ask that you limit your laundry use to 2 loads per week. Short term guests (1-2 nights) who need to use the laundry facilities can do so at a charge of $3 per load. Please don't start any laundry before 10:30 p.m.

We are happy to share the back deck and back yard common areas with our guests. We also have a secured garage if you need to store a bike or two.

Guests who stay with us should be comfortable using stairs. There are 4 stairs up to the guest entrance, and 10 stairs down to the basement apartment.

Règlement intérieur
Non fumeur
Ne convient pas aux animaux
Pas de fête ni de soirée

We do not allow smoking indoors; however, there is a fenced yard and a covered front porch where people can smoke.

Check out time is set at noon to get ready for incoming guests. Most of the time we can work something out if you need a late check out, but check with us first to be sure we don't have anyone coming that afternoon.

- Be kind to the apartment - we charge a very low cleaning fee for your benefit, so please reciprocate :)
- Quiet time 11 pm - 7 am, but you can come and go as you please. We live above the apartment, but won't hear you as long as don't yell or don't blast the TV volume.
- No unapproved guests or illegal drugs
- Be sure to close and lock the back gate behind you (our dogs need to stay in the yard)

Corinne and Tom have a very comfortable place to stay in. A microwave and hot plate allow for making breakfast or simple meals. When the bedroom heater acted up Tom took care of it right away. Couldn't ask for more. We'll try to stay with them the next time we go to Seattle.

We had a great stay at Corinne and Tom's. The photos don't really do the place justice. Lots of space for a big group and a modern, clean bathroom. Easy check-in and out, and a nice quiet location. Experienced hosts made it a breeze. I would recommend staying here and would not hesitate to stay again.

Place was amazing. My family and I definitely felt at home. Tons of games for my son and I to play, he was so happy there.

It's a comfortable space for a basement apartment. Having a little bar in the one room is fun. The neighborhood is quiet but a 7 minute cab ride gets you to all the nightlife and restaurants in Ballard. I'm 6' 3" so there are a few places where I had to duck. It wasn't a big deal.

We are avid Airbnb guests as well as hosts. We first stayed at an Airbnb location in Sydney, Australia, while honeymooning in January 2012, and were so impressed with our experience that we are now hooked! Not only are the Airbnb properties a good value, but more importantly, we have had amazing interactions with each of the hosts at locations where we've stayed, which now have expanded beyond Sydney, AU, to include a few locations in our home state of Washington as well as cities such as Paris, France, Vancouver, Canada, England: London, Cornwall and Bath, Oregon: Portland and Bend, California: San Francisco, Sebastopol, Petaluma, Willits, Palm Springs, and Sonora, New York: Williamsburg and Ithaca, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Miami. We've been a guest in 33 different Airbnb locations over the past 5 years. In fact, I can't remember the last time we stayed at a conventional hotel!

Since we had such great experiences as guests, we decided to start hosting in the summer of 2012 and listed our guest room on Airbnb. Hosting has proven to be a fantastic experience since we are both seasoned travelers and enjoy chatting with others about their travels, etc.

In terms of demographics, we are both in our mid-forties, have traveled all around the country (and the world) and are also are very tidy and respectful. Beyond travelling, we like listening to live music, exploring neighborhoods, having fun with our dogs, gardening and cooking great food, spending time near the water/beach, and meeting new people.
