Please read our description thoroughly before booking.
Our Hickory Hut is a new, cozy, one-room cabin, perfect for one or two only, under towering shag-bark hickory trees, with a queen-size bed, very basic kitchen, and comfy outdoor shower/sink and compost toilet. Cook outside, relax in the hammock, meditate in the tree house, get back to nature.
Enter the gateway and stroll the path into an enchanted grove where the beauty of nature will rejuvenate you. Ancient shag-bark hickories tower above you, sunlight dapples the ground, birds sing, chipmunks frolic.
The Hickory Hut is new construction, 12 x 12 feet, that provides a clean and lovely shelter for two adults. With leafy window views on all sides you'll feel embraced by the forest. The queen-size bed is super comfortable and a small table provides space for writing or dining when the weather prevents outdoor living. The inside kitchen area has no plumbing, but does have essentials like a jug of water for drinking, a mini-fridge, a single electric burner, and a French press for coffee.
Bedding and towels are provided. For extra cool nights, additional blankets are available. The cabin is equipped with a small room heater that will helps take the chilly edge off on mid Oct. evenings.
Follow a short path outside to a private shower and sink with warm water, plus an eco-friendly composting toilet, all under a translucent cover that gives the feeling of open sky. Also outdoors is a small wood-fired brick stove, a table and chairs, a hammock, and a raised platform for yoga or meditation. We provide utensils and cookware. Also, a small hibachi grill is available, which you're welcome to use if you bring your own charcoal. The essentials are all here for you to experience a peaceful, natural outdoor retreat. While no open fire is allowed at your site, we do have a fire pit in our yard which you are welcome to use if you ask us first.
Other guests are nearby, but are not going to enter your area. You'll have plenty of privacy indoors and out.
The Hickory Hut is closed during the winter.
Accès des voyageurs
The Hickory Hut is located in the edge of the woods adjacent to our other rental building and to our home. We would appreciate it if you limit your activities to the spaces we've prepared around the cabin. There are plenty of hiking trails available nearby.

We always try to greet you when you arrive. Our home is nearby on the same property, so we are usually available when you need us, but we're glad to leave you alone to enjoy your getaway.
Our family is Wendy Drolma, a maskmaker; Brent Robison, a writer/photographer, and our teenage daughter Akanksha. Our pets, Casper the dog and Serena the cat (she's employed as a mouser and does a fine job) are both friendly and love a pat on the head. They roam freely during the day, but the dog is restricted from your area by an invisible fence. If you have an allergy, please note that neither animal has ever been in your cabin.
In order for us to help you settle in, it's best to arrive in daylight hours. The forest can be pretty dark!
Important note: not all biodegradable soaps are safe. Some can contaminate water supplies. That being said, some biodegradable soaps are gentle and earth friendly. They don't include phosphates and other chemicals that are nearly impossible to break down and remove from the water supply.
We provide EveryOne brand shampoo and body wash. This product is easy on your skin and is Eco-friendly. We ask that no other beauty or cleaning products be used in our outdoor shower and sink.
If you're not familiar with dry composting toilets, this is an opportunity to learn about the most earth-friendly way to treat our human waste. After each use of the toilet, you'll simply cover the result with a scoop of peat moss from the nearby container. This is organic material that immediately goes to work breaking down the waste. There is no odor. After your stay, it all goes into a compost pile that will eventually turn into rich soil for gardening.
There is no internet service provided in cabin.
If you prefer a less rustic experience, please look up our other offering, Peaceful Catskill Mountain Hideaway. It's located on the same property and accommodates two.
Or, if you're in need of more space than this cabin provides, please look up our other offering, the Artful and Serene Woodstock Getaway (aka the Maskmaker's Studio). It's also on the same property and sleeps up to four.
Smoking is not allowed on the premises.
This is a pet-free rental.
Since there are other guests nearby, we request quiet enjoyment.
We look forward to meeting you, and ask that you treat this lovely, peaceful retreat with care.

We are Wendy Drolma, a maskmaker, and Brent Robison, a writer/photographer. We've lived in the beautiful Woodstock NY area for 20 years after moving up from NYC. Wendy has a charming studio/showroom in the center of the Woodstock village, which you are welcome to visit. Brent published a literary journal featuring Hudson Valley writers and knows the local literary scene. We love the natural beauty and artistic energy of this region and are happy to give you a comfortable home base from which to explore. Whether we're traveling or hosting, our style is laid-back, friendly, and respectful.
