We stayed at Pica's place for two nights and three days with our two kids ages 2 and 5. We had an amazing experience learning about the Boruca culture and meeting Pica's family. Maga, Pica's sister in law cooked for us every meal and all were delicious. We took a tour to the waterfalls with a guide named Eduardito who told us about the Boruca beliefs and stories of the falls and of the surrounding areas and fauna. We also learned how to carve and paint masks with Eduardito and one of Pica's cousins. Our children loved playing with the other kids in the village. The house was beautiful and amazingly decorated. The bed was huge and very comfortable. We would definitely recommend for a cultural experience in Costa Rica in a beautiful home.

My boyfriend and I had such a fun time in Boruca at Pica's place! What a story! First off, it was hard to find Pica's place only because we did not have service and Costa Rica is known for not having street names! The closest airport is Buenos Aires but we had a car with four wheel drive (you will need this)! When we arrived in the village, we didn't know where to go and ended up asking several people in the small town where Pica lived. Since it's such a small town, everyone knew Pica's family! Finally, her brother in law, Junior found us and led us to Pica's beautiful house on the hill! An amazing spot! It was a perfect romantic getaway for my boyfriend and I since it was literally in the middle of nowhere! The house had wifi so when we finally reconnected, we saw that Pica gave us specific instructions on where to go. Haha! Boruca isn't a tourist town, and is quite the opposite! We were the only Americans there and no body spoke English however, that is exactly what we were looking for! The only restaurant is owned by Pica's mother in law who cooks whatever you ask for! It is such a tight knit town that everyone knows where to go to get awesome LOCAL food. What an adventure! We were able to hike to a nearby waterfall and reminisce in the beauty of rural Costa Rica. An amazing experience! Pica's place is gorgeous! She has decorated the place with family photos and relics. The bed was comfortable with clean sheets and blankets. You must be ok with nature/insects as there are a lot of them! Since Pica is away, we spent most of our time with Junior who told us all about the town and his family (as much as we could understand in Spanish)! We ended up getting drinks at the one bar in the village with the locals and had a blast! We were taken care of and everyone was very friendly to us throughout our stay. Pica's place is not for those looking for a luxurious "resort" style vacation. But if you want to get to see how REAL Costa Rican indigenous people live, this is the PERFECT spot! If we ever get to come back, we are no doubt about it, staying with Pica and her wonderful family! Thank you for everything!

Kate, Thank you for those kind and very true words! You described it perfectly. The town of Boruca isn't for everyone and our house, while nice for Borucan standards, is not a luxurious resort. Thank you for taking the time to meet and connect with the people. The people of Boruca is what makes it a beautiful place to visit.

I am a teacher, a mother, a partner, a yogi, a runner and a world traveler. I live in the San Francisco Bay area and teach Spanish at a private school in Oakland, California. My husband and I run a summer travel program. We take students to his Indigenous Community in Costa Rica. He is from Boruca, Costa Rica. We have a 5-year old daughter named Kanani. We love traveling in Central America together when we are not living and working in the U.S. Our passion is sharing the Borucan culture with others.
