West of the Imperial Palace, in one of Kyoto’s most historical neighborhoods, lies a machiya house that reflects the traditional and charming features of Japan’s former capital. Up to 6 guests are able to stay in this Kyoto machiya house.
From the soft light filtering through the lattice windows, the subdued glow reflecting off the garden’s greenery, to the flood of natural light coming from the skylight above the kitchen — “Tachibana-an” will provide you with a relaxing and airy space during your stay in Kyoto.
A few feet away from the Kyoto Imperial Palace, you will find a machiya house designed with dark, wooden lattice windows contrasting its white walls. Although small and modest at first glance, one step into “Tachibana-an” and you will find yourself in a spacious and airy traditional house.
-----LIVING SPACE / GARDEN-----
This tatami-lined area features custom-made washi paper (和紙; delicately thin Japanese paper) — designed with the concept of the “circle of life” in mind, this golden-hued washi gently reflects the light filtering through the windows.
Enjoy the traditional elements found in many Japanese gardens. A small, stone-carved pagoda, a Japanese water fountain known as “sozu,” and the rich green hues of the plants and trees featured within the “tsuboniwa”.
A fully functional kitchen can be found on the 1st floor. Because all of the basic kitchen necessities are available, you will be free to use the kitchen to make light meals during your stay.
ESSENTIALS: refrigerator, microwave, rice cooker, kettle, toaster, Induction Heating plates, kitchen utensils, and enough cutleries and dining ware for 6 guests.
A dining table is available for you in this open-plan space. Ideal for guests who are not accustomed to the tatami floor seating — there will be cushion seatings, and 2 chairs available when sitting at the dining table.
This bathroom has been designed using tiles resembling wooden planks and green & black ceramic detailing. At the foot of this spacious bathtub is a window– unwind after a day of traveling as you peer out into the “tsuboniwa” garden.
A separate toilet space is available on both the 1st and 2nd floor.
During your stay, relax and unwind in this room after a long day of traveling around the historical city of Kyoto. When 6 guests stay in this machiya house, 2 futons will be set here.
A large window gives backdrop to 2 twin-sized beds — providing plenty of light in the bedroom. An adjacent window looks down into the machiya’s “hibukuro,” a traditional chimney space that opens up from the 1st floor all the way to the rooftop. At the top of this hibukuro is a skylight– another source of natural light that opens up the space within “Tachibana”.
The Japanese tatami-lined room (traditional straw mats) incorporates western influences in design. With the warmth of the natural light flooding the room, you will be able to experience a tranquil atmosphere that can only be experienced in this machiya house. 2 Japanese-style futon bedding can be set here.
