My place is a 19th century artisan dwelling - eg it's compact and well built. We have a pleasant garden and one room has French windows opening on to it. At the end of the garden there's a small river so lovely to sit and enjoy it.
We're about 15 mins walk from the centre of Oxford and most of the colleges but there are also buses going to the city centre

Le logement

This is a writer's household so it's a fairly quiet, calm place. If you like peace and calm, then walk down the end of the garden where you'll find a small tributary of the Thames. ( This means the house is not suitable for children so sorry about that.)

Accès des voyageurs

The house is small and so too is the kitchen but it's there for making tea. coffee. There's a pleasant little coffee place round the corner if you fancy a cappuccino and of course Oxford is full of grand cafes especially in the Covered Market. Blackwells , Oxfords premier bookshop has a chatty little coffee shop and well worth a visit is the new cafe in the Bodleian Library which is right beside Blackwells
Most visitors to Oxford eat out and I can certainly suggest places to go to. One involves a lovely walk down the lane to the pub which likes to call itself a gastro pub.
However, the city of full of places and some pubs which are associated with the Inspector Morse TV series. There are also many very old [pubs which give a better flavour of the city....

Échanges avec les voyageurs

Always here to help and provide ideas and information so all you have to do is ask.
Be warned, however, that I work from home so each morning between 9 and 10, I just withdraw to work in my study.
I'm especially interested in people who want to improve their English and always glad top give a help hand in that area.

Autres remarques

You've chosen a good part of Oxford to stay in: traditional house and neighbourhood in a residential area. I always advise people to say hello to the neighbours or indeed anyone they meet in the street. Residents will be wondering who you are!

Mary's place was more than I expected. The photos are a little off but the room is bigger than it looks. There is a private bathroom just outside the door but it's not shown. The room is very private and off in its own wing on the ground floor. The private garden by the river is charming! Everything is within walking distance and there's so much to see and do. Mary is a great help and a very interesting person besides.

I spent a few days in the house. It was clean and quite, with small garden at the back. The kitchen was accessible to everyone. Mary was a great host - she was very helpful and hospitable. A walk to the city center took about 15 mins.

To say that Mary is a wonderful host would be an understatement; I came to Oxford for a conference and a museum, and left regretting that I didn't have more time to just chat and listen to Mary's stories. If you're looking for a home with a soul off the tourist trail (but still comfortably close to it), you shouldn't miss this place.

I'm a journalist though some people call me a travel writer. Both descriptions fit the bill. When I travel myself, I use low budget places... cheapest. That's partly because I'm a writer and you get to meet far more people if you travel solo. I play the alto sax badly, hav…
