Le logement

Great house, great village, great access to the city. That's why we moved here 5 years ago and why we think this place is a real find for anyone wanting to be in the New York metropolitan area for 6 or 7 months between Jan 2017 and July 2017.

Hastings-on-Hudson is a cute quiet haven with lots of history and a 30 minute express train commute to Grand Central Terminal, in the heart of Manhattan. It’s known as one of the “Rivertowns,” four small villages along the Hudson famous for their laid-back vibe as well as their artistic and intellectual bent. You really have the best of both worlds, since fast commute into the city is matched by easy access to the charming orchards, farms, and nature of the lower Hudson Valley. If you want to learn more about Hastings, look for one or more of the recent articles in the New York Times Real Estate section featuring our village as it draws a new wave of families, especially from Brooklyn. One of the articles, for better-or-worse, was entitled “Hipsturbia.”

Our place is centrally-located in the village. We routinely walk the 0.4 miles (0.6 km) to our local full-service grocery store, or 0.8 miles (1.2 km) to the Saturday Farmers’ Market, the gorgeous library overlooking the Hudson River, the train station, and the downtown shops and restaurants. The locals celebrate and frequent the downtown; it recently got a new taco place, a new gastro-pub is thriving, a new raw bar is coming soon, the sushi place is excellent, the falafel shop is a winner too. No chains here, just local businesses. We also take the five-minute stroll in the other direction, into miles of protected nature trails in the “Hillside Woods” or up to the local elementary school for the playground and fields.

The house is a charming “Cape Cod,” recently remodeled, clean, and very comfortable. Four years ago we gutted the kitchen, opening it up to the dining room and adding all new appliances, floors, counters, cabinets, etc. It's fresh, clean, light, and in good shape. We also added a back deck, which is a wonderful place to grill and dine in the spring and summer. Come spring, the front porch is the perfect spot for sunsets or morning reading. The main sounds come from birds and neighborhood play.

From the back deck you'll find a spacious, secluded, and inviting yard. Situated on a hillside, the space has been cultivated into a woodsy garden and veritable adventure playground. A playhouse, hammock, and tree swing invite kids and adults alike, while hanging lights and a fire pit extend the enjoyment past dark.

Back inside you'll find a breakfast bar, an extendable dining room table, a comfortable living room, and three spacious bedrooms (two upstairs (king and twin) and one on the main floor (full)). The master has a small walk-in closet and room for two large dressers. The bedrooms have two windows each, all looking out on trees and greenery. Our neighbors on either side are above and below us and separated from us by trees, so the house feels very private.

We remodeled the basement recently. There you'll find a large guest room/office (really another bedroom if desired) as well as a desk, printer, and access to the outdoors via the private driveway. Adjoining the guest room/office is a laundry room with space for storage and a work bench. There are two full bathrooms in the house, one (upstairs) recently remodeled. The floors are hardwood, with the exception of the basement which got fresh carpet a few years back.

No pets or smokers have lived here and we ask that you not bring either. We have wifi, a TV, and stereo equipment throughout the house. Rent includes regular cleaning.

We love this place and hope you will too! Let us know if you have any questions!

My wife Brenna and I are both professors at Fordham University, a job we've held since 2008. I work at the Manhattan campus and Brenna at the Bronx campus. We have two kids, ages 2 and 6. We love New York both for the city life and the outdoors. Our little town is located perfectly at the intersection of the best of both.
