À propos de ce logement

Tucked away next to the Mississippi River, you will find no other place quite like this in New Orleans. Built in 1930, this cottage has soaring ceilings and tons of natural light. In addition to your private cottage you can also enjoy the outside patio and garden area and even feed the chickens if you like. They're very friendly and we've found that a great way to enjoy your morning coffee is just sitting down and watching "Chicken TV".

Description

Le logement

This is a gorgeous 400 square foot studio located on our micro farm. The cottage is modern, fresh and private, bursting with clean lines, lots of natural light, and a serene quietness. You will have your own private bathroom, queen bed, full kitchen, and lounge area. Upon prior request, we will deliver a farm-to-plate breakfast of eggs, fresh bread, jam and coffee. You can bring your own food if you don't plan on eating out for meals, but the food in New Orleans is amazing and inexpensive if you do it right. We will leave a list of our favorite spots around town.

Our small environmentally-conscious and modern farm is a dream come true - and we are excited to share it with you during your stay! You will love it here. It is the perfect place to write, relax, read, take photos, celebrate, and/or get away and recharge for a bit. Though, all that the amazing city of New Orleans has to offer is just minutes away.

Accès des voyageurs

You are free to come and go as you please. There is a large backyard patio and garden with an outdoor sofa and chairs At night, there are cafe lights that make the backyard cozy and beautiful. Our chickens are let out in the yard at sunrise and are put to bed before sunset. Please do not enter the vegetable garden without an explicit invitation.

Échanges avec les voyageurs

We are committed to respecting your privacy but we also want to make sure you have the best possible experience while you're in New Orleans. We live on the property and are happy to answer any questions and help you make friends with the city, but if you're looking to be left alone, we are good at that too.

If you want to get your hands dirty and help out with the chickens, weeding and harvesting in the garden, or any other farm tasks, let us know! We love helpers :)

Le quartier

Holy Cross is just a stone's throw away from the French Quarter, Bywater, and Marigny, but the access to the levee, quiet of the neighborhood, and Mighty Mississippi only a block away make it quite the retreat.

The neighborhood may not be for everyone. It is very quiet and residential, and the closest bar/restaurant (Bacchanal - a fantastic wine bar) is a mile away. You will not rub elbows with other tourists in this part of town, though you will encounter artists, fishermen, and families out on the levee, walking dogs, jogging, and enjoying the view of the river and skyline. The neighborhood is changing rapidly, with many houses being remodeled and reclaimed. If you're looking for interesting architecture, friendly neighbors, and a truly local experience, this can't be beat.

Keep in mind that we are only 3 miles (a quick uber ride, a gorgeous bike ride or a long meandering walk) from the French Quarter, but it feels worlds away. Walk on the levee at sunset, breathe in the smell of the river, feel like a local.

Transports

A car or bike is essential to getting around town, though New Orleans is best seen by bike. A taxi or uber is always just a call away. There is a bus stop approximately 4 blocks from the house if you prefer.

We're happy to store bikes in the backyard. If you're relying on taxis or uber we'll shoot you a text if we're headed uptown as we're happy to drop you off in the quarter :)

Autres remarques

We have two very friendly dogs named Iggy (a westie) and Puna (baby German Shepherd). They usually hang out on the front porch of our house, but you may see them roaming the backyard with the chickens.

Due to boat traffic on the river (yes we are that close!) wifi on the property works for email, maps, and general browsing. Streaming movies are often interrupted, so if your idea of a great vacation is to catch up on Netflix, this may not be the best listing for you.

If you're looking for something slightly more upscale, the luxury guest wing of our historic double shotgun is also available for rent and can be viewed at "Urban Farm Suite- Private Entrance & Bath."

The farm cottage was truly amazing. It was set back in a quiet neighborhood but close enough to the French quarter and other attractions. Tim was incredibly easy to communicate with and more than accommodating. It was raining when we pulled into town and he made sure to provide us with umbrellas and refreshments. The cottage is a cozy getaway that makes you feel like you aren't anywhere near a city while being well within one.

This was a really cool spot as advertised and Tim is a great host. Loved the fresh eggs and "chicken TV," and the neighborhood -- a nice place to walk around, walk on the nearby levee. If you want a quiet spot off the beaten path, away from the French Quarter, this is a good choice.

Ok here is the deal. You're probably thinking how can there be a farm with open land right next to the French Quarter? Well there is and you have to go to a neighborhood called Holy Cross located in the Lower 9th ward. Now when you first think about this area you probably have negative thoughts regarding Katrina. That resulted from the Lower 9th getting some negative media attention during the catastrophe. But let me tell you from someone who went to school in this city and who has friends who went to high school at the now abandoned Holy Cross school building located a stone’s throw from this cottage, this place is not what you think! You have open fields of grass and you can walk and run at the levy and you have so much privacy and yet you are so close to the city. Here are some major positive things to consider when booking this place: Privacy because the cottage is detached from their home. Clean and well decorated and hip looking place that has chickens and an awesome outdoor patio area and you have a private entryway to get to your place when you get home from seeing the city. Uber rides cost only 7 dollars to get to Frenchman St even during peak times! I went to Jazzfest and it cost only $12 to get to the fairgrounds. Good luck getting that rate staying anywhere else. That’s because this place isn’t a tourist trap! And when you look at the map this place is so close to the quarter and the neighborhoods of Bywater and Marigny. Just a small pedestrian bridge separates the cottage from the Bywater area. Safety is another reason. I felt so safe coming here back home late night after Uber dropped us off as compared to other parts of the city. I can tell that the neighbors know each other and there is a sense of pride in their community. That makes me feel safe because let’s be honest, walking around late night in NOLA as a lost tourist is not safe no matter how much liquid courage you think you have! But when staying at Tim’s cottage you are not a tourist, you become a local and your host truly makes you feel like this is your home away from home.

This is a perfect place to spend a weekend in New Orleans. Tim was a perfect host, he was great with communication and his recommendations were spot on. The urban farm was beautiful and peaceful, we couldn't have asked for a better stay! We highly recommend having dinner at Bacchanal (which is close to the house) and the Butcher (close to the WWII museum, also highly recommended). Definitely stay here if you're coming to New Orleans!!

Tim and Betsy's place is amazing, well decorated and great value for money, a little outside of the action but easy walking distance to the Bywater which has a lot of nightlife and a short cycle from the French Quarter (they have bikes available to rent). Our taxi driver made a few remarks about the area when he dropped us off but it could not be more contrary to our experience of the place, very quiet family friendly area and felt completely safe the entire time. The most attentive and helpful hosts I've had through Airbnb they had lots of suggestions that we were glad that we followed through on.

If you are looking for something out of the way, but still close enough to everything you could want to experience in NO, this is the place. Located in the Lower 9th Ward, the neighborhood was quiet and safe. Tim's place is a little gem in the rough. We were starting an 8 day road trip across the country and this was our first stop. It is a cute little micro farm on the outskirts of New Orleans where you get to drink coffee with chickens and sample some of the fresh produce from a totally organic garden. The cottage was very private and comfortable with everything you could want. We were able to walk to the French Quarter and spent the day taking in all that is the Big Easy.

I had a fantastic time in New Orleans, and in Tim's apartment. The levee is only footsteps away, which makes for enjoying fantastic sunsets over over the Big Easy. Tim communicated clearly and to the point - great host!
