If you love wide open spaces, fresh air, a quiet night in a soft bed, natural building, gardens and fruit trees, sustainable living, starry skies and gorgeous clouds, happy chickens and excellent hospitality, then this is the place!
Enjoy the tranquil countryside in this unique rustic cottage. Apple Cottage was built in 2007 with timbers from Jenny's grandfather's farm. They were sawn on site, and assembled with the help of many volunteers. The straw-bale walls, adobe floor and earthen plasters are all locally sourced and sustainable. We have a penchant for hospitality and love to show people our unusual farm, buildings, projects etc. But if you just want to enjoy the peace and quiet, that's OK too.
This 600 square foot cottage includes queen bed, loft with twin bed and optional air mattress. There is a love seat, walnut counter, wardrobe, wood stove, fan, electric kettle and some great books about natural building. Apple Cottage has no indoor plumbing, so we provide a pitcher and basin, a full bathroom in the main house (27 steps away) and an optional dry composting toilet. We have a working farm, with vegetable gardens, orchard, farm animals, and plenty of quiet roads for walking and biking. The sunsets and stars are amazing out here. Expect casual clean and a natural yard. A bountiful breakfast is included, with eggs from our own chickens.
We are located 10 miles from I-70, an hour’s drive from MCI Airport, half an hour from Topeka and an hour from Kansas City. Lawrence, Kansas, home to the University of Kansas, is an easy 15 minute drive. The historic downtown features original eateries, a fantastic brew pub, great shopping, and a vibrant music scene. Nearby Perry Lake has fishing, boating, swimming and hiking.

We love to chat about our land and lifestyle, but we have work to do and animals to tend, so forgive us if we hustle off right after breakfast.
The cottage has no air conditioning, and can get a little warm (85 degrees) in the daytime during July and August. With fans and windows open, it cools down nicely at night.
We welcome you to our working farm! We love to field questions about our place. Expect casual clean and a natural landscape. We welcome guests in our main house for bathroom and shower, breakfast and hospitality, but it is a tiny house and we go to bed early.
Small well-behaved dogs and cats are welcome, but they must be on-leash and under your control when outside on account of our other animals. Let us know if you are bringing a pet. Smoking is allowed outside. Guests can use the kitchen and grill, but give us a heads-up first.
If you stop by the main house between 7am and 9:30am we'll cook you breakfast--farm fresh eggs and toast and hot coffee. We can also make oatmeal, tea, fruit and we have cereal too. Let us know when you prefer to eat.
Tim and Jenny live in a world of interesting things. We are enjoy sustainable building, pottery, letterpress printing, cooking, gardening, heritage breed animals, and making music. We built our home ourselves and we keep chickens and have a small permaculture farm. Jenny is the visionary behind CarmaHop, and is the country's first professional hitchhiker. Tim teaches Letterpress printing, builds, runs a small saw mill and grows most of our food. We believe in justice, democracy, sustainability and loving our neighbors.
As a guest, we are very low maintenance, will eat most anything, sleep like a rock. We know a little bit about a lot of things and are good conversationalists with a healthy curiosity and a desire to share our interests and our fun space.
